I believe in predictions that are said to happen a few days after the prediction is made not a long time after it's made. And made based on facts. The date 12/21/12 came from the Mayan's Mesoamerican Long Count calendar, it is simply the date the calender will go to the next Baktun "20 katun cycles of the ancient Maya Long Count Calendar". A Baktun is approximately 144,000 days, equal to 394.26 tropical years.

The Mayans that still practice to this day, have stated this does not mark the end of times, but a change.
