I am very much interested in getting some suggestions as to what config I should go for. Everything needed that is compatible with BD Total Security and something hacker-free (bulletproof).

Upgrade to BD 2013. I have just installed it and its a marked improvement over the 2012 edition. Also BD just has a sandboxed browser. So use sandboxie or BZP. And also its not a problem to keep windows firewall on. I have not observed any conflicts so far.
