Remove Mobogenie virus (Removal Guide)

Mobogenie is a potentially unwanted program which uses the OpenCandy, Quick Downloader, Conduit and various other monetization programs to bundle with third party installers.
Mobogenie is a program that can be used to transfer pictures and other data between your PC and phone, however very often users have no idea where did it come from, so it’s not surprising at all that most of them assume that Mobogenie is a virus.
Mobogenie it’s technically not a virus, but it does exhibit plenty of malicious traits, such as rootkit capabilities to hook deep into the operating system, browser hijacking, and in general just interfering with the user experience. The industry generally refers to it as a “PUP,” or potentially unwanted program.

Mobogenie is a software program developed by Beijing Yang Fan Jing He Information Consulting Co. During setup, the program creates a startup registration point in Windows in order to automatically start when any user boots the PC. A scheduled task is added to Windows Task Scheduler in order to launch the program at various scheduled times (the schedule varies depending on the version). The software is designed to connect to the Internet and adds a Windows Firewall exception in order to do so without being interfered with. The primary executable is named mobogenie.exe. A majority of users end up uninstalling this less than a week of it being installed. The setup package generally installs about 35 files and is usually about 44.39 MB (46,546,384 bytes). Relative to the overall usage of users who have this installed on their PCs, most are running Windows 7 (SP1) and Windows 8. While about 12% of users of Mobogenie come from the United States, it is also popular in MA and IQ.

You should always pay attention when installing software because often, a software installer includes optional installs, such as this Mobogenie adware. Be very careful what you agree to install.
Always opt for the custom installation and deselect anything that is not familiar, especially optional software that you never wanted to download and install in the first place. It goes without saying that you should not install software that you don’t trust.

I can’t thank you enough for your advice. Lately I have been getting Mobogenie error messages when trying to transfer eBooks from my PC to my Sony Reader. Couldn’t find any Mobogenie stuff to delete. Am using Zone Alarm for security, scanned with Malwarebytes with no joy. Ran Hitman Pro as suggested – it found & removed traces of Mobogenie. Thanks.

I found an .apk file on my Trio Slealth Android, I believe it was called mobogeni.apk or something similar. It was not from Google Play. I sometimes download apps from the Opera Mobile store. However this app appeared entirely unasked.

Usually I archive all .apk files to my removable SD card. I became suspicious of this one and deleted it. Then I became curious and looked it up on the android browser. I found this page.

My suggestion to Android users who like me occasionally install off a non-Google site is to turn off Install from Unknown Sources except while deliberately installing from such a source and then turn it off again.

Check all of your devices, your other Androids, iPods, I phones, laptops and computers. If you find mobogenie get rid of it. Check for other unasked or I-don’t-know-how-they-got there-apps/programs and uninstal them.

It is very unfortunate that some sopposidly good software is actually malware. The virus/malware packages should update and mark mobogenie as what it is, a malwared and uninstall it.

The developers of Mobogenie and the android stores with it need to take it down. I am shocked at the cyber-irresposibility!

MoboGenie is a stone cold malware product that takes hours to remove from a computer. One key characteristic of a malware program is that it DOESN’T come with a simple removal tool built in, but instead has to be removed with multiple other antivirus tools. MoboGenie cannot be removed using any standard antivirus tools but has to be painstakingly removed piece by piece over hours.

Unfortunately, MoboGenie is the only interface I’ve found that successfully connects my Samsung S3 Note clone to my Microsoft XP PC. If I had a junk computer that I could use ONLY for MoboGenie, then I would install MoboGenie in that computer, to get the photos from my Samsung. But, that goal is not worth all of the bloatware that comes with MoboGenie and people who have tried MoboGenie agree that it slows down their computers.

Do NOT install MoboGenie unless you are prepared to spend four hours removing it.
