STEP 1: Remove Politia Romana lock screen from your computer

Politia Romana Ukash Ransom has modified your Windows registry and added its malicious files to run at start-up, so whenever you’re trying to boot your computer it will launch instead its bogus notification. To remove these malicious changes,we can use any of the below methods :

Method 1: Start your computer in Safe Mode with Networking and scan for malware

Some variants of Politia Romana virus will allow the users to start the infected computer in Safe Mode with Networking without displaying the bogus lock screen. In this first method, we will try to start the computer in Safe Mode with Networking and then scan for malware to remove the malicious files.

  1. Remove all floppy disks, CDs, and DVDs from your computer, and then restart your computer.
  2. Press and hold the F8 key as your computer restarts. Please keep in mind that you need to press the F8 key before the Windows start-up logo appears.
Note: With some computers, if you press and hold a key as the computer is booting you will get a stuck key message. If this occurs, instead of pressing and holding the “F8 key”, tap the “F8 key” continuously until you get the Advanced Boot Options screen.
  3. On the Advanced Boot Options screen, use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode with Networking , and then press ENTER.

  1. Salut!

    Astept raspunsul tau!

  3. Thank you!
    Very, very usefull!
I used step 2 – installed and run Malwarebytes.
    Worked OK!
PS1: @Andrei – in my start-up folder there was the shortcut only. I could delete it but this did not solve the issue. The file in the Temp folder could not be manually deleted. The infection was active only when connected to the Internet.
PS2: I was lucky I could use the internet connection to look for a solution – I first run the Windows CD Kit (Update action) and then I could use the explorer and internet. Initially, I was infected when using IE8. After the “Update” I used Mozilla I had previously installed in my computer.
    Enjoy!

  4. I did it manually – in fact, the infection inserted an entry in the start-up menu called runctf with the property: C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe C:\DOCUME~1\User\LOCALS~1\Temp\wlsidten.dll,H1N1

By starting in any way the computer (either in Safe Mode, or even from a bootable floppy disk, in fact in any way that you can get acces to the files) you can navigate to the stat-up folder and delete the entry – this will unblock the desktop. Be careful if you navigate from the windows start menu not to run the runctf entry as this will block again the desktop and you’ll need to restart again.
After that, restart you computer normally and search in the temp folder of your web-browser the file wlsidten.dll and delete it (or search it with any file search utility).
The start-up folder is located in the Documents and Settings/User/Start Menu/Programs/Startup.
You can search in the start-up folder of all users (in the Documents and Settings you’ll find basically a folder for each user of the computer, but also including administrator and All users).
As a hint – H1N1 is the influenza virus…. so the start-up line tries to call the H1N1 function from the dll file.

  5. Va sunt foarte recunascator. Multumesc!

  6. Salute Stelian,
    Foarte tare si simplu
    Mersi frumos

  7. Iti multumesc mult Stelian!M-ai salvat!
