The perfect computer security is a myth! Typically when a user suspects that their computer has been infected it is normal to say that it has virus. This is the term most used by the everyday user and serves to encompass all that "be evil" in the system.

But what if your system is the target of an attack? Here are some tools that can help detect intruders.

1) Nmap

The Nmap ("Network Mapper") is a widely used tool to audit the level of security in computer networks. This tool is also commonly used by hackers who use it to remotely assess what doors open on a given machine, identify the operating system installed on the remote machine and thus explore potential vulnerabilities.

Since NMAP is a command-line tool, you can always try the Zenmap that has graphical interface.

2) Wireshark

The Ethereal is a protocol analysis tool, which allows capture in real time, data packets, and presents the information in a readable format for users. The traffic capturing process is performed via the network adapter ,, this operating in a special mode that is designated promiscuous mode (ability to capture all packets, regardless of the destination address).

With this tool can, among many things, detect suspicious network traffic.

3) Ettercap

The Ettercap is one of the most comprehensive tools to detect attacks man-in-the-middle on a local network. With Ettercap is possible to intercept real-time communications, content filtering...

These are some suggestions. These tools are the most popular. Most of them are free tools, other than Nexus (which may be experienced for a period of 7 days).

Any others suggestions tools to evaluate PC security?
