This unique footage is only possible because of recent advances in drone technology. A manned helicopter could never get this close to an active volcano, with lava pouring out of vents at temperatures up to 2,192°F (1,200°C).
The video was shot by a DJI Phantom 2, an RTF (ready-to-fly) quadcopter with a gimbal mount and GoPro camera. The Phantom is highly regarded by drone enthusiasts for its durability and above-average flight time of 25 minutes.
