It would seem the word 'Best'{o_O:D} shall always be seen as inflammatory for it's technically incorrect use which enters into the realm of personal preference.

Case in point: My wife would like something other than Kaspersky preferring, similarly to @zeusc4's description of Norton, something 'I' shall... "Install" so she can "..forget :D"!
I voted for Emsisoft (for Windows 8.1) although incompatibility with Virtual Box brings me to consider removing the latter (VB), while I'd also chosen ESET (for our Window 7 SP 1) which also covered the criteria mentioned.;)
Steering well away from the concept of any one being 'Best', I shall remain open to trying everyone's favorite (one at a time) and may install Kaspersky on Windows 8.1 instead. Having downloaded ESET Smart Security 8 this evening, it shall most surely be 'preferred' by my wife, and that affords this life a lot more reasons to smile!:D

The anti-virus "Golden Rules."

1. Use an AV that actually works on your system without any serious issues.

2. Choose an AV that you can learn to use skillfully.

3. Choose an AV that you will use consistently with discipline over time.

If you find an AV that satisfies all three criteria, then you have found the "Best AV of 2015" for both you and your specific system.

Every single one of the AVs in the poll (with Avira being the exception) using the correct settings will protect the average user under typical conditions. For example, they visit reasonable sites and do not over-ride the AV when it blocks a site, download from sites with a good reputation, use only "Trusted" apps, etc.

For the "click-happy" warez, porn site, file shares using, download anything type, then any of the AVs in the list will not protect the system; in that case, it would be an exercise in utter futility.

No one can surf far and wide with impunity... unless you use a certified read-only Live CD every single time.

Totally agree with @Cats-4_Owners-2

My wife likes AV as Bitdefender with autopilot , which do not have to make any decisions . I prefer to interact with my AV , so i can not tell which is better, there are various philosophies of users.

That said, my vote goes to Qihoo even without the firewall, has many layers of defense, HIPS , its GUI is simple, has a high detection rate . If it was a payment AV, i would have it on my computer too

it all depends on the end users needs , each has his / her own favorite av , based on the fact which makes you the most comfortable. for noobs ( with all due respect ) it most likely will be bitdefender with autopilot , mse or norton because they do not want a talkhappy hips or bb wich leaves the choices to act on a certain detection in their hands. like said many times before their is no best of the best. even the products with the highest detection rates have off days against malware. generally speaking there are three top players : paid eset , kaspersky and bitdefender. free : avira , qihoo. why do I use AVG , you all might ask? besides from being a fanboy ( I not afraid to say that openly here :D ) I feel very comfortable using it. and that is what it all boils down to. just go out and test various products , just like me it will be a trail and error in finding the holy grail. just go with what you like best and keep on using it!

If Qihoo was a paid AV it would lost a lot of users, it has a lot of false positives at this moment. Users like it because its free, I'd rather pay for ESET,Kaspersky,Emsisoft.

Yeah, okay , I talk about my case, I would pay for this AV, in fact, be the only AV would pay .

I 'm using Qihoo for quite some time and many FPs as discussed . also you can upload a detection if you consider questionable , but again , I downloaded a lot freeware and just gives me problems with PUPs in the installers

But this is just my opinion

It is clear that if payment would lose many users , as if Avast, Avira , AVG , Panda , Comodo withdraw from the market ... if its free products also lose many users , many of us we prefer free combos.

And totally agree, that if equal prices, most users would migrate to the AVs you comment, surely they are the best in the market

Kind regards

Give us a break from "what is the best..." threads. There is atleast one thread of this kind every week and its really boring. Mods should ban such users posting these threads.
While I'd admit to the tediousness of this type thread, with its highly subjective opinions, and which often times come on the heels of a similar in the same week, I disagree that such threads should be banned. In my view, censorship is just as counter-productive as any tiresome post.

There is no "Best Antivirus". It doesn't exist. Unless every single Antivirus left the industry and was shut down except ONE, there will be no "Best Antivirus".

Each Antivirus product has different strengths. For example, I personally feel that ESET has a good detection rate with their signatures/heuristics compared to the other products. Their weakness may be the default settings for the HIPS, or the HIPS in general. Another strength they have is a good web filter, and performance on the system whilst ESET is protecting the user. Most users don't feel any system impact at all.

Emsisoft have a well-loved Behaviour Blocker zero-day protection component working alongside their cloud protection to verify suspicions the BB may have, also providing more features such as auto-decisions based on what other users did with a detection (if the cloud is enabled of course). Their weakness could be the signature-based detection/PUP + PUA detection. They may have Bitdefender, but that's not to say their own engine could be improved. Emsisoft also have a good reputation for a very clean user interface - everyone has their own opinion and like other vendors, however I also feel that way about the Emsisoft UI. However, at the same time, Emsisoft could try to improve the system performance whilst running the product - I have been a user of both EAM and EIS in the past, and I did experience a slowdown. It was not that bad to remove the product, however I noticed it.

avast! have a feature called DeepScreen. This feature will help detect malware before allowing it to execute malicious actions on the users system (gets uploaded and executed in the cloud whilst being virtualized). This will allow avast! to log the behaviour occuring during execution and decide if it should be allowed to run on the users system or not. This also prevents many malicious software from executing on the system.

Kaspersky have the Application Control as part of their zero day prevention protection, however some users experience some issues with this feature. Kaspersky could get this fixed to improve their product. Another weakness to Kaspersky could be it being heavy on the system.

Qihoo have a sandbox which people may appreciate and want to use. They could improve on their false positive detection (removing the false positives).

Panda could maybe think about how they work their updates - not that long ago they had experienced issues which left some users unable to boot Windows. Panda did address this issue and do everything they could to get their users back up, however it still happened.

Norton have their reputation-based detection which does help detect a lot of potentially suspicious programs. This could be a strength for Norton.

At the end of the day, each user has their favourite and it's up to the user, no matter what advice is given. Advice is given to help give the user a understanding towards the product (and maybe based on their own experience). It's down to you to decide what product to use. I recommend you go through using some trials (most products allow a 30-day trial) before purchasing one to find the AV you like best.

Every vendor has somewhere they can improve on. There is no "Best Antivirus".

Cheers. ;)
