Western Digital is a good firm, low failures on their drives.

Dont go for Seagate Drives ever theirs fail really often.

No need to format, as it should already be formated to NTFS. However some WD software installers may be preloaded on the disk, possibly. Not required to install.

Partitioning is possible if required.

No problem in that brand as proven by quality (WD), alternatively in my experience you can try Toshiba External HDD, proof of not easily destroyed by such accident like fell down on a bit high altitude and good read and write speed.

As much as possible no need to format as the bundled tools included are primarily backup.

I'd go with WD. I have a Seagate 500gb external drive that's still working after 3 years. My Western Digital Elements is new but Isee it's much faster than the Seagate. You may want to check the links below:

Well the resource consumption is at mild to moderate to accomplish those tests or format, so you may browse web or do something low task and avoid fully occupied the memory that may cause slowdowns/hung.
