BBC: Google launches ad-free net experiment
"Google is looking at other ways of generating revenue, and this new venture might raise an eyebrow or two. They have launched a new trial service called "Contributor".
It works by you paying a monthly subscription fee of $1 - $3 and the participating websites will show a pixelated pattern or a 'thank you' message instead of the normal advert. The websites currently signed up are ScienceDaily, Urban Dictionary, The Onion, WikiHow, Mashable and Imgur, more will follow. Part of the money goes to Google and part to the website in question.
The service seems to be US only at the moment and it is ultimately just an experiment to gauge opinion, but sites can sign up to put themselves on the waiting list if they want to take part.
To me this sounds like a goodwill service and whether you want to support the sites involved. Most people are just going to continue using their normal ad blocker though."
