Hi and I thank you in advance for any help you can offer.

My name is Sherri and I was searching for a way to get rid of the annoying (and potentially malicious) popups that I've begun to receive when using Facebook. I found this forum and a thread started by Karen Konz, in which she describes exactly what is happening to me. I have copied/pasted below her description of the problem here as she did a much better job describing it than I could.

I have attached the FRST scan log and also the Addition.txt log. I have also attached a couple screenshots of popups received so far today (9/7/14). Again, thank you in advance for any help you can offer.

Below is Karen Konz's description and screenshot:
"When I'm on Facebook & click anywhere on the page, or try to open a post that was shared in a separate Tab, an additional 1 or 2 tabs open, trying to get me to download/update a video player called Lightspark (?). One of the unwanted tabs opening, would automatically start downloading, and the only way I could stop it, was to click on "cancel". After awhile though, that feature wasn't available, and it would download to my desktop. I always got rid of it, since it was just sitting there. When I did a search online, I saw many articles or links pertaining to Lightspark. I've got a screen shot photo of the one that's showing up the most, but am not sure how I can post or show you all, at this time. This has been going on for about 3 weeks or so, now. And it only happens when on Facebook, not any other webpage, or even gmail."

Hello,

They call me TwinHeadedEagle around here, and I'll be working with you.

Before we start please read and note the following:
  • At the top of your post, please click on the "Watch thread" button and make sure to check Watch this thread...and receive email notifications. This will send an email to you as soon as I reply to your topic, allowing me to solve your problem faster.
  • Please do not install any new software during the cleaning process other than the tools I provide for you. This can hinder the cleaning process. Please do not perform System Restore or any other restore.
  • Instructions I give to you are very simple and made for complete beginner to follow. That's why you need to read through my instructions carefully and completely before executing them.
  • Please do not run any tools other than the ones I ask you to, when I ask you to. Some of these tools can be very dangerous if used improperly. Also, if you use a tool that I have not requested you use, it can cause false positives, thereby delaying the complete cleaning of your machine.
  • All tools we use here are completely clean and do not contain any malware. If your antivirus detects them as malicious, please disable your antivirus and then continue.
  • If during the process you run across anything that is not in my instructions, please stop and ask. If any tool is running too much time (few hours), please stop and inform me.
  • I visit forum several times at day, making sure to respond to everyone's topic as fast as possible. But bear in mind that I have private life like everyone and I cannot be here 24/7. So please be patient with me. Also, some infections require less, and some more time to be removed completely, so bear this in mind and be patient.
  • Please stay with me until the end of all steps and procedures and I declare your system clean. Just because there is a lack of symptoms does not indicate a clean machine. If you solved your problem yourself, set aside two minutes to let me know.
  • Please attach all report using
    fjqb1h.png
button below. Doing this, you make it easier for me to analyze and fix your problem.

  • Do not ask for help for your business PC. Companies are making revenue via computers, so it is good thing to pay someone to repair it.
  • If I don't hear from you within 3 days from this initial or any subsequent post, then this thread will be closed.

Thank you for your prompt reply!

I've attached the Fixlog.txt, but the AdwCleaner that I downloaded was all in German. While I do speak conversational German, I was lost with technical stuff. I wonder why it gave me the German version?

A thousand apologies, but I should have told you up front that this laptop, along with Windows 7 was purchased in Germany and I suppose that is why the AdwCleaner downloaded in German. In any event, since I speak enough German to be dangerous, the following is the content of the report. Unfortunately, it is also in German :( I have no clue how to get the report in English.

Thank you again for sticking with me on this. When I pressed Löschen, it apparently deleted some essential components to Express Scribe. Express Scribe is necessary to me because I work from home and it is the software that allows me to load the dictation that I download from my employer's website. That being said, I was in too much of a hurry when I was doing this yesterday to determine if it actually deleted those components or only messed with my desktop shortcuts. I had created a restore point prior to beginning any of this cleanup and I restored to that point last night.

Tonight, after work, I will rerun the fixlist.txt and AdwCleaner and resubmit that data to you. If you have any suggestions in the meantime, I'm all ears :)

Again, thank you for your patience in working with me to solve this truly annoying popup problem.

Hey. I was wondering ... since the AdwCleaner deleted some Express Scribe components, should I run that again? I can do the fixlist.txt no problem, but I'm afraid of again deleting my Express Scribe stuff. Suggestions?

Oh dear :( It seems when I restored to the restore point, I lost the FRST program and it is not clickable anymore in your initial post. I can, however, download the fixlist.txt. If I understand correctly, that won't do any good without having the FRST program.

I guess we'll have to continue this tomorrow because I need to go now. I look forward to your response in posting another clickable link for the FRST program and whether or not I should run the AdwCleaner. Thank you.

Hello,

Download FRST again from this link.

Let's this time just scan with Adwcleaner without fixing anything.

adwcleaner_new.png
Scan with AdwCleaner

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode and save the file to your desktop.

  • Right-click on
    adwcleaner_new.png
    icon and select
    RunAsAdmin.jpg
Run as Administrator to start the tool.
  • Follow the prompts and click Scan.
  • Upon completion, click Report. A log (AdwCleaner[R*].txt) will open.

Please include the contents of that file in your reply.

Attached are the Fixlog.txt and the AdwCleaner report. There were actually 3 boxes containing NCH that I unchecked before pressing delete.

:( It's still sick. Still getting the Lightspark popup while in Facebook. This time though, when I started typing my FB password, Yahoo popped up in a new tab. That's never happened before.

I can make screenshots of any popup I get. As far as restoring my router to factory settings, do you mean the wifi router? If so, I've got the book on it somewhere and can probably do that. If I can do it, will it affect the other devices that are connected to the router?

I'm going to have to get ready for work now, but I'll be back this evening to work on this some more. Thank you for your help!
