The new Prey is now officially official
Thing is, today we're officially launching our new platform, long rethought, obsessively redesigned, and fully rewritten from the ground up. A fiercely battle-tested new Prey that offers smarter and better protection from thieves, and -- yes -- in a very-much-needed-thank-you simplified user interface. We did hear you.
About the new technolog-iferous
You might remember that Prey works by connecting an agent, that runs on your phone or laptop, to a centralized server that sends over instructions at your command. In short, we've made substantial changes to when and how this communication is done, so that your device reacts to your requests with no delays in a real-time fashion (i.e. you can now get any device's location with a single click, but that's just the tip of the iceberg).
To achieve this, we rewrote the client-side software for desktops with a completely new set of tools and components. The result is a leaner, faster, more secure client that even has a lower memory footprint than the previous one.
Upgrading your computers
Despite the challenges of jumping from one technology to another, we've carefully sketched and laid out a migration process that ensures a smooth transition for all devices. What this means is that no action is required on your behalf -- if you have any laptops running an older version of Prey, and unless you manually disabled the auto-update option, they should automatically download and migration to the latest and greatest.
Now, we're doing this in a gradual and very controlled way so it might take some time before your machine actually gets the update. So if you want to give the new Prey for a spin and see what it feels to be like John Rambo ASAP, you can always download and run the new installer manually from our website.
Just remember to put on a red bandana.
