Hi. My name's Roy. I've never used virus protection other than AVG and a firewall but that was years ago. My laptop updated to WIN8.1 a couple of months ago and now I have a popup virus. I cannot run any browsers because the popups are so fierce. If I turn off Java I can operated Firefox in a limited capacity. Not sure what to do here. So, any tips would be awesome!

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatibale with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them.
Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.

  • Double-click to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press Scan button.

  • The first time the tool is run, it makes also another log (Addition.txt). Please attach it to your reply.

I opened a new IE browser window and typed in some random URL and was taken to some odd page. I think there might still be some malicious code in IE. Can I reinstall it like we did with Chrome?

In add/remove programs, IE is listed as:
Microsoft SQL server 208 Browser
