Hmm, should seek the roots ..
Just now I found an interesting Greek site, look at this topic on Christianity: Future of Christianity in Europe: on ellopos.net/elpenor/koinonia ELPENOR's Forum, named Koinonia : http://www.ellopos.net/elpenor/koinonia/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=92&whichpage=1

Stranger wrote justly: '.. There is big difference in supernatural force and God. '
Precisely in this Greek topic look at George's response in his first post (Page 1): 'The expression itself of a ‘supreme being’ is an expression essentially non-Christian. If we set aside the Holy Trinity, Christianity has no meaning. The Trinity has nothing to do with ..' - read more .. Yeah, OK.

I have a quick question for those connoisseurs of Romania images: from where comes (what church, what town ..) this wonderful image I posted on Post # 52: Cui Noi Este Dumnezeu - God with us? And when it was painted? I love this picture.;)

CYPRUS - Christ's Face in the Troodos Mountains and Orthodox churches and monasteries

In the central part of Cyprus, in the mountains of the Troodos range, some of the most important monuments of the history of Byzantine painting have survived.

'In 1974, Turkey invaded and occupied the northern portion of the island. The intercommunal violence and subsequent Turkish invasion led to the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Cypriots and the establishment of a separate Turkish Cypriot political entity in the north.' .. 'The Republic of Cyprus has de jure sovereignty over the entire island of Cyprus and its surrounding waters except small portions that are allocated by treaty to the United Kingdom as sovereign military bases.
The Republic of Cyprus is de facto partitioned into two main parts, the area under the effective control of the Republic of Cyprus, comprising about 59% of the island's area and the Turkish-occupied area in the north, calling itself the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, covering about 37% of the island's area and recognized only by Turkey.' ..

But make no mistake: the object below is a fertility symbol and has absolutely NOTHING to do with Jesus Christ .. This object is called the Idol of Pomos, a prehistoric sculpture from the village of Pomos, Cyprus. You can see it in the Cyprus Archeological Museum in Nicosia. Large numbers of this kind of sculptures were found in Cyprus. Smaller versions were worn as amulets around the neck. 'The Hymn to Liberty or Hymn to Freedom (Greek: Ὕμνος εἰς τὴν Ἐλευθερίαν, Ýmnos is tin Eleftherían) is a poem written by Dionýsios Solomós in 1823 that consists of 158 stanzas, which is used as the national anthem of Greece. It was set to music by Nikolaos Mantzaros, and is the longest national anthem in the world by length of text. Hi, I found a very good read (I added this link on Post #35, Page 4 too) :
The Existence of the Immortal Soul : by ks. Mieczysław Piotrowski TChr: on Love One Another loamagazine.org : http://www.loamagazine.org/nr/eternal_life/the_existence_of_the.html

Little quote here, if you allow me:

'Near death experiences
Near death experiences also testify to the human soul’s existence and endurance after death. In their book Immortality: The Other Side Of Death, Gary R. Habermas and J.P. Moreland have documented numerous instances of people, including sightless people, who suffered clinical death. One blind man experienced clinical death as a result of a tragic accident. After regaining consciousness, he was able to describe in the minutest detail the manner in which the medical staff resuscitated him. All this, he had observed through the “eyes” of his soul. Other people, blind from birth, have also described the process of their resuscitation. These descriptions include details such as the color of the clothing and jewelry worn by members of the medical personnel.
The disappearance of brain waves for a given period is currently the most important indicator of natural death. But there have been cases of people whose encephalogram (EEG) indicated a total cessation of brain waves, i.e. their brain had stopped functioning; and yet documented evidence shows that during this period of clinical death when the patient’s brain had stopped working, the mind had registered and later, after resuscitation, was able to recall the smallest details of the events taking place precisely during this period of “brain death.” Here is clear evidence that human consciousness does not depend on the brain and continues to exist after the death of the body.
Habermas and Moreland describe the case of a woman whose EEG indicated brain death and who consequently had been pronounced dead. Yet three and a half hours later, when her body was being removed to the morgue, the woman suddenly regained consciousness and lifted the sheet covering her face. Later, she recounted that she had been floating over her body throughout the resuscitation attempts and seen and heard everything. She remembered every detail from the time her brain had been in a state of clinical death. The astounded doctors were forced to declare that the patient’s account of the event was in total accord with the truth.'

'The unity of soul and body
Man is a physical-spiritual unity. According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, “The unity of soul and body is so profound that one has to consider the soul to be the ‘form’ of the body; i.e., it is because of its spiritual soul that the body made of matter becomes a living human body; spirit and matter, in man, are not two natures united, but rather their union forms a single nature” (CCC, 365).
Pope John Paul II recalled the Church’s teaching regarding the unity of the human being in his encyclica Splendor veritatis: “The spiritual and immortal soul is the principle of unity of the human being, whereby it exists as a whole–corpore et anima unus–as a person. These definitions not only point out that the body, which has been promised the resurrection, will also share in glory. They also remind us that reason and free will are linked with all the bodily and sense faculties. The person, including the body, is completely entrusted to himself, and it is in the unity of body and soul that the person is the subject of his own moral acts” (SV, 48).
Science tells us that the matter constituting the human body, including the brain, undergoes a complete change at the atomic level every seven to nine years. Despite this, we do not become new persons every seven to nine years. What causes the human being to remain one and the same person despite the passage of time is the spiritual soul, which is the basis of unity. Man is a union of body and soul. He is unable to think of himself apart from his body. He cannot treat it as useless ballast. Modern theology tells us that the body is the soul’s material representation–its self-realization. The human soul always bears reference to a material body, even after death, when, living in Christ, it “awaits” its bodily resurrection. Seen in this light, reincarnation is a total negation of the truth of the human person as revealed by Christ. Holy Scripture clearly states that, “it is appointed that human beings die once, and after this the judgment” (Heb (9: 27); “Recall him not, for there is no hope of his return” (Sir 38: 21). Reincarnation endorses the racist caste ideology underlying Hinduism and denies the unrepeatability of our life on earth when we decide our eternal future–salvation or damnation. Those who espouse reincarnation reject Christ and open themselves up to the power of evil spirits.
Since the soul is a spiritual reality, it transcends the world of matter and is by its nature immortal, for God always keeps it in existence. God invites every man and woman to love, that is, to be an unselfish gift of themselves to Another. He invites everyone into a community with Himself through Christ in the Holy Spirit. The possession of a soul, observed Cardinal Ratzinger (now Benedict XVI), means that the human being is wanted, known, and loved by God. It means that we are creatures called by God into an eternal dialog of love with Him. If we chose to reject this invitation, to remain stubbornly in a state of sin, and to refuse to allow Him in His Boundless Love to work the miracle of our forgiveness, then we are on our way to that supreme tragedy which is the eternal hell of selfishness. By consciously choosing evil, we can totally destroy our capacity to love and break the ties of love that bind us to God and others–that is, we can chose hell. But what we cannot do is destroy ourselves, for the personal “I,” which God keeps in existence, is indestructible. We can destroy our bodies, but we do not have the power to destroy our souls.'

Then home page of loamagazine.org Love One Another: http://www.loamagazine.org/pg/en.html - love an another read.
Good example here: The Central Event of World History: http://www.loamagazine.org/nr/eternal_life/the_central_event_of.html

'The final 24 hours of the earthly life of Jesus mark the most important event in the history of the world. Too many of us have grown hardened and insensitive to the gospel accounts of the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus.' ..

Angels, querubines (guardianes de la gloria de Dios) - ZWqqV.jpg 890x550 - My mom gave me this picture before his death ..
Revelation 19, 5-10:
5. A voice came from the throne: "Praise our God, all you his servants, all you who revere him, both small and great!" 6. Then I heard what sounded like a great crowd, like the roaring of the waves, like peals of thunder, answering: Alleluia! The Lord now reigns, our Lord, the Master of the universe! 7. Let us rejoice and be glad and give him glory! This is the time to celebrate the wedding of the Lamb, his bride has made herself ready. 8. Fine linen, bright and clean, is given her to wear. This linen stands for the good works of the holy ones. 9. Then the angel told me, "Write: Happy are those invited to the wedding of the Lamb." And he went on, "These are true words of God." 10. As I fell down at his feet to worship him, he said to me, "Beware, I am but a servant like you and your brothers who utter the testimonies of Jesus (these testimonies of Jesus are proclaimed through the spirit of the prophets). Worship God alone."

Last minute news:

Frescoed early Christian tomb found in Bulgaria’s Plovdiv : http://sofiaglobe.com/2012/07/13/a-frescoed-tomb-found-in-downtown-plovdiv/

'Archaeologists have uncovered a unique for the Balkan Penninsula frescoed tomb in central Plovdiv, preliminary dated as old as the fourth century CE.
According to archaeologists, quoted by public broadcaster BNT, this is the first burial chamber of its kind found in Bulgaria. It is believed to have belonged to a rich family from Philippopolis – the ancient Greek name of the settlement that later became Plovdiv.
The walls of the burial chamber are adorned with images of Jesus and the famous Biblical episode with the resurrection of Lazarus. The paintings are in red, black, white, ochre and green.
The head of the dig, Maya Martinova of the Plovdiv archaeological museum told BNT that similar early-Christian paintings can only be found in the Roman catacombs.'
- but NO pictures for now ..
No pictures .. hmm I hope this is not a hoax ..

Well, more news from Bulgaria:

Archaeology: New finds at ancient burial mound near Bulgarian village ( Mon, Sep 12 2011 11:08 CET) : http://sofiaecho.com/2011/09/12/115...t-ancient-burial-mound-near-bulgarian-village
- 'These include a very rare object from the time, a portable table, a stylishly decorated large circular plate, a special form of drinking vessel which archaeologists jokingly dubbed a champagne cup. The latter, according to archaeologist Daniela Agre of the National Archaeological Institute and Museum at the Bulgarian Academy of Science, has no equivalent among previous finds in the country.'
NO photos. Hmm ..

Archaeology: 'Oldest rakiya relic' found in Bulgaria: http://sofiaecho.com/2011/10/10/1173236_archaeology-oldest-rakiya-relic-found-in-bulgaria
'An inscription on a cup depicting rakiya - a traditional form of brandy - said to date from the 14th century CE is proof that Bulgarians invented the drink, National History Museum director Bozhidar Dimitrov said on October 10 2011.'
NO brandy .. Hmm.

They have a lot of work, these Bulgarian archaeologists, I see ..

The Icons of St. Catherine's Monastery, Mt.Sinai

'The Holy Monastery of the God-trodden Mount Sinai, Saint Catherine's Monastery'

'The Greek Orthodox monastery of the God-trodden Mount Sinai is located at the very place where God appeared to Moses in the Burning Bush, beneath the Mount of the Decalogue. In the providence of God, it is at this site also that the holy relics of Saint Catherine are enshrined. This is the oldest continuously inhabited Christian monastery, with a history that can be traced back over seventeen centuries. The monastery predates the divisions of the Christian world, its origins extending to late antiquity.
The monastery has never been destroyed in all its history, and thus it can be said to have preserved intact the distinctive qualities of its Greek and Roman heritage. Members of other Christian confessions have honoured the monastery, coming as pilgrims to this holy place. But from its beginnings, the Christian inhabitants of Sinai belonged to the Greek speaking world, and it has remained so to this day.
The earliest description refers to the Monastery of the Holy Virgin, for the revelation of God at the Burning Bush was seen as a type of the Virgin Mary and the Incarnation. The monastery is also especially dedicated to the holy prophets Moses and Elias, who both came to this mountain, and who both spoke with Christ at the Transfiguration. More recently, it has been known as Saint Catherine’s Monastery. This remains its name today, though the monastery has not lost its earlier dedications.' ..
'The monastery can be thought of as a veritable Ark for its spiritual treasures. These include the manuscripts and early printed books preserved in the Sinai library, which is celebrated throughout the world for the antiquity and importance of its volumes. It also includes the monastery icons, which include the most important collection of pre-iconoclastic panel icons, and icons of the greatest beauty and significance dating from the time of the Comnene dynasty.' .. - read more at sinaimonastery.com : http://www.sinaimonastery.com/en/index.php?lid=1

'One of the world’s oldest Christian monasteries, commonly known as St Catherine’s Mount Sinai, is about to enter the twenty-first century by allowing scholars to read its digitalised manuscripts online.
More properly known as the Sacred and Imperial Monastery of the God-Trodden Mount of Sinai, its world-famous library is home to the second largest collection of early codices and manuscripts after the Vatican Library. St Catherine’s has also been in continuous use as a monastery for seventeen centuries, making it as ancient, if not more so, as the equally famous Monastery of St Antony, founded by the father of monasticism himself.
According to James Purtill, writing for the Egypt Independent, St Catherine’s Texan-born Librarian, Father Justin Sinaites, is currently in the process of digitalising all the monastery’s extremely important manuscripts, ‘which up until now have been kept under lock and key.’ These texts will soon be available on the internet for any ' .. read more at areluctantsinner.blogspot.fr link above, please.

BULGARIA - Christ's Face in the Boyana church, Sofia

The Boyana Church (Bulgarian: Боянска църква, Boyanska tsarkva) is a medieval Bulgarian Orthodox church situated on the outskirts of Sofia, and consists of three buildings.
The frescoes in the second church, painted in 1259, make it one of the most important collections of medieval paintings.
The Boyana frescoes are an early example of the icon-painting style which later on was adopted in mural painting and as such they mark the beginning of specific features which strongly influenced the Tirnovo artistic school. The icon-style murals that became widespread in the Serbian, Russian and Mount Athos monasteries during the 14th to 16th centuries are closely related to this innovation.
On UNESCO World Heritage List.

The End of the World is Near!, then ..

SIGNS of the END of the WORLD : on danielmitsui.com/hieronymus : http://www.danielmitsui.com/hieronymus/index.blog/2044990/signs-of-the-end-of-the-world/

' .. There was no faith in the earthly destiny of humanity, and no idea of what was later to be called progress; far from becoming better, men would become worse, and this would be the sign that time was up.

First of all, and this is the initial sign, charity will turn cold in men's heats. The author compares humanity to an aging man whose vital heat diminishes; the human soul will pass through a kind of glacial period; the flame of love that had so long warmed men's hearts will burn low, and then be extinguished.

Consequently, and this is the second sign, selfishness will reign supreme in the world: dedication, self-sacrifice, such words will no longer have meaning; self-interest, that is, immediate self-interest, will become the universal law.

Finally, and this is the third sign, out of selfishness man will break all his ancient ties with the past. There will be no more nations, no more families; the son will rise up against his father; the husband will abstain from his own wife who sleeps in his arms...

When harmony is destroyed in the soul of man, it will also be destroyed in the entire universe, for the same law that rules the human soul rules the earth and the stars. Fifteen cosmic catastrophes will announce the final day ...'

The Jesus Christ little Child's facial expression - on MESOPANDITISSA icon - Madonna della Salute

tXCsP.jpg

The Madonna della Salute, Mesopanditissa, 12th c. Santa Maria della Salute, Venice - enh. tXCsP.jpg 800x1093

'The centre of the high altar in the Santa Maria della Salute holds the icon of the Madonna of Health, installed here in November 1670. It came from Candia cathedral where it was known as the San Tito Madonna or Mesopanditissa (after the day on which it was celebrated, between Christmas and the Presentation of Jesus at the Temple). Doge Morosini brought it to Venice as a trophy after peace had been made with the Turks at the end of the Candia war. Tradition has it that the artist was St Luke the Evangelist and that it is consequently a miraculous sacred image, but it was actually the work of a 12th century Madonna painter. The shadowed face and penetrating eyes are particularly effective.'

There is no chance, coincidence does not exist, there is no 'mother nature' - everything is consciously developed and led to good by God.

'Everything God has created is good, and no food is to be rejected, provided it is received with thanksgiving:' - 1 Timothy 4:4.
- in The New Jerusalem Bible (NJB): http://www.catholic.org/bible/book.php?id=61

The thought of God is in all things. All creation comes from God - will of God is in everything, the whole creation of God has a reason and a purpose.
Christ our God wanted to come and live as a man in time chosen by him among the nation chosen .. He chose His Mother, his apostles, his sufferings and death on the cross to save us all. His resurrection was not a coincidence, far from it. Everything, everything is the Will of God.
His tortured body imprint on the Shroud was also consciously developed by him. And all other images truly 'not made by human hands' - were gifts from him to us, very nice .. Gifts consciously made by him - for all of us.

'The images of a living Christ, the Image of Edessa, the Veil of Veronica, and the image brought to Constantinople in 574, provided evidence that Christ wanted to have images of himself, something the iconoclasts denied.'
- quote from the Charles Freeman comment #19, on: 'Quote for Today: Hans Belting and commentary' Must Read post by Dan Porter, on his Shroud of Turin Blog: http://shroudstory.com/2012/09/06/quote-for-today-hans-belting-and-commentary/

Other memorable quotes:

daveb of wellington nz - comment #5:
'It is interesting that Belting makes the point that many such images were made in the sixth century. Various features are frequently repeated, slavishly, even when they seem to make little artistic sense. It is a no-brainer that there must have been an original template which became standard. And then others more geographically remote would use copies of the standard template (We are.not talking modern photography here).
What was the template commonly used? Was it the “Christ Pantocrator”, the “Image of Eddessa”, the “Mandylion” or something else? From the Byzantine chronicle, to the extent it might be believed, we can infer that there were at least three such claiming to be the original, the Orthodox, the Monophysite, and the Nestorian. Very likely there were others. Perhaps one such copy became the “Veronica” or the “Holy Face of Manopello”. Not only the multiplicity of images, but also different names for what may have been the same object, contribute to our modern confusion. It is significant that the various copies made all radiate out from Edessa, as Belting asserts, all claiming to be copies or likenesses of the “Image of Edessa”, possibly subsequently modified by local artistic conventions.
Let us now turn to the Turin Shroud. I do not accept the following circular reasoning, which seems to be frequently promoted. “Byzantine art was loth to represent a dead Christ and blood stains. Icons show a live and triumphant Christ without blood stains. The modern negative photo we have of the image of the Shroud show a very dead Christ with blood stains. Therefore notwithstanding any common features between the Shroud image and the icons, the image on the Shroud could not have been used as the original template.” ..
.. All of the 15 Vignon features appear on the Turin Shroud.
So we are left with two possibilities. Either a medieval forger anticipated Vignon and included the various features he had discovered from icons onto his work. Or else the Shroud itself was the 6th century source for the original template. Some of the Vignon markings only make sense in terms of folds or creases in the cloth. How credible is it that a 6th century Edessan forger could make such an artifact with all the properties that only our modern era has discovered? And remember, Belting himself has said that the icons emanated from Edessa!'

daveb of wellington nz - comment #18:
'Here are a few historic references, which you may or may not be well aware of concerning the cloth(s) held in Constantinople (Byzantium):
(a) Guscin’s translation of 12th C.Latin manuscript Tarrogonensis 55: said to be originally written by a pilgrim who spent a long time in Constantinople in 1090. The pilgrim refers to a linen cloth with the face of the Lord Jesus made by direct contact, held with greater reverence than other relics in the emperor’s palace, kept locked away in a golden case Only the emperor is permitted to see it. The case used to be open once, but the city was hit by great earthquakes. As a result of a heavenly vision, the relic was hidden away from human eyes and kept locked up, and the earthquakes stopped.
Now it seems that Constantinople is not at all prone to such earthquakes, but we know that Edessa was. So it seems very likely that this is the Image of Edessa, but no-one gets to see it around this time, except the emperor.
(b) Around 1130, high ranking western visitors are shown the emperor’s collection of relics. Normandy-based monk Orderic Vitalis reports that the Jesus-imprinted Edessa cloth, besides Jesus’ facial imprint displays ‘the form and size of the Lord’s body to all who look upon it’, [Ord Vit, Historia Ecclesia, Pt II, Book IX, 8]. This might seem to be a second-hand report, but it seems that Gervase of Tilbury makes a similar observation [Gerv of Til, Otia Imperiala III] .
(c) Dobschutz Christusbilder Beilage III, p. 134: Refers to Latin Abgar Legend,.where
Christ spreads out his whole body on a linen cloth, … majestic form of his whole body … divinely transferred … kept in Syria Mesopotamia at the city of Edessa in a great cathedral.'

daveb of wellington nz - comment #26:
'There are a number of indirect 4th century references to the Shroud or burial cloths:
In AD 325, Pope Sylvester established – “that Mass be celebrated on an altar covered with a cloth of linen consecrated by the Bishop, as if it were the clean Shroud of Christ.”
Theodore of Mopsuestia (350-428) describes the role of deacons: “When they bring up (the oblation at the offertory) they place it on the altar for the completed representation of the passion so that we may think of Him on the altar as if He were placed in the sepulchre after having received the passion … the deacons who spread the linens on the altar represent the figure of the linen cloths at the burial….”
Saint Nino of Georgia (4th C): “Now they did not find the sudurium, but it is said to have been found by Peter, who took it and kept it, but we know not if it has ever been discovered.”
Ishodad of Merv writes:” …the (sudura= sudarium) … remained with him [Peter] … head. And whenever he made an ordination, he arranged it on his *head … just as even … bishops of the Church arrange the turbans that are on their heads… in place of that sudarium” [Shroud is obviously too large - it may refer to the head cloth]
The 6th C Mozarabic rite reveals that: “Peter ran with John to the tomb and saw the recent
imprints of the dead and risen man on the linens.”
I can provide the citations for these if Charles wishes to pursue them further.
I think that it is evident that there was rather more interest in the burial cloths in the early church than many seem to have been prepared to concede.'
