You need to think a lot about your config. First and foremost your Real-Time protection and then about your browser add-ons, on demand scanners etc. Goodluck.

I would suggest for browser addons WOT, Adguard, LastPass for passwords and maybe Blur or Ghostery. Some on demand scanners such as Emcisoft Emergency Kit and MalwareBytes Antimalware. And some backup software such as Aomei Backupper or Macrium Reflect. And also Ccleaner to clean up junk files. That is a start anyway. Thanks for sharing. :)

First you need backup and recovery at your hand like External HDD/ USB.

Is this an OEM Laptop? You may use Windows Defender built in of Windows 8 as your baseline protection (means it can protect basic common threats but not so high)
or change it to Avast Free or Avira Free.

Considering OP has Medium as knowledge, I think we can safely assume if we give some guidance, he/she can tweak McAfee. Don't think that the within 6 months infection entry should allow us to judge and simply advise to swap av solutions.
