Do you wish you had a portable Xbox One — a way to play your games while you’re away from your TV? Microsoft doesn’t offer any sort of Remote Playfunctionality, but there is a solution: the Xbox One laptop. A clever tinkerer named Ed Zarick has developed a clamshell Xbox One mod that lets you play your console even when you’re away from your living room. Want one? Well, prepare to lay down more than a grand for this behemoth.

Mr. Zarick has experience building laptop-style mods for the Xbox 360, but the Xbox One conversion process is quite a bit different. Not only did he have to start off with a bulkier console, but he started implementing 3D-printed plastic parts to this build as well. With a combination of laser cutting, 3D-printing, and a custom-ordered monitor cable, the final product looks absolutely gorgeous on the inside and out.

Unlike some previous laptopified consoles, this so-called “Xbook One” uses a full 1080p LED-lit LCD panel from Vizio. Of course, it’s also a 22-inch monster, so that certainly hurts the portability of the device. Zarick’s site doesn’t list the total weight of the finished product, but it’s easy to do some ballpark estimates. A stock 22-inch 1080p Vizio TV is listed on Amazon as weighing 6.5 pounds, and a stock Xbox One is roughly eight pounds. Put the two together, and that’s about 14.5 pounds — not exactly something you want to carry around in your backpack.

Powering an Xbox One and a TV at the same time would require a comically large battery pack, so this model only works when plugged into the wall. However, it only needs a single power cable, so there’s no need to bring a power strip everywhere you go. With wireless controllers and built-in WiFi, this is truly a single-cord device.

So, want one of your own? Zarick is willing to sell you your very own Xbox One laptop, but it’s going to cost you a pretty penny. If you send him your Xbox One, it’ll cost $1,095 (plus shipping) for the conversion process. If you just simply buy an Xbook One from him flat-out, you’ll pay $1,395 plus shipping. Want a Kinect as well? Throw in an additional $100 on top of that.

It’s heavy, it needs to be plugged into the wall, and it costs more than three times the price of a stock Xbox One. It’s not exactly a practical investment, but it is a fascinating project. If you’re dying for an all-in-one Xbox One experience, this is literally custom-made for you. Good luck explaining to your spouse why you’re dropping over a grand on a game console, though.
