Browsing the Chrome Web Store, I stumbled across these fairly old extensions by Avast and Avira. They are extensions that will display cheaper deals when browsing common online shopping sites (ie. amazon.com).

However, what's the deal behind these extensions, do they companies like avast and Avira get incentives by referring users through the affiliated services?

I have the link that both services used, but lost it in my browser history.

Avast SafePrice
Code:
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/avast-safeprice/eofcbnmajmjmplflapaojjnihcjkigck/related?hl=en-US
Avira Savings Advisor
Code:
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/avira-savings-advisor/hiokmggjplkcnnnnmdchgdpinckndfof?hl=en-US

Recently, avast! removed SafePrice from their Online Security addon for Chrome.

As you can see in the link below, although not malware, 55% of the ShouldIRemoveIt users have uninstalled it from their PC.

I've also always wondered myself how the AV vendors profit from this as well. It could be that they get a profit whenever a user clicks on the link that their extension shows which brings them to a partner's site that does sell the product for a cheaper price (sort of like what youtubers do, having a link that is specific to their channel that sends viewers to their sponsors site and telling them that this particular youtuber sent them) or it could be an old feature when AVs were still new in the industry and they just wanted an added feature to promote their AV and just never removed it as time progressed even though I would say it's kinda outdated.
