Microsoft just dropped a bombshell on its loyal fans by announcing that Cortana, the beloved personal assistant, will be coming to Android and iOS; that launch will be alongside a new Windows 10 app called Phone Companion.

The new app, which will become available to Insiders in the next few weeks, is designed to give users a smooth experience when using Windows 10 regardless of which mobile device you use. Phone Companion will work with Android, iOS and Windows Phone and will help users sync their photos, music and so on. The app will also direct users to download Cortana and other possibly useful apps like Xbox Music and OneDrive.

Also part of this deal is Microsoft's commitment to unify users' experience. For example, they will be directing Android or iOS users to store their photos and music in OneDrive so they can have a fluid experience that stays synced up when moving from their iPhones or Droids to their Windows 10 PCs.

Microsoft will also continue to emphasize that the best experience is still on Windows devices, though its clear from its actions that the company is less focused on its own hardware and more willing to be present wherever its users are. This is not doubt a good move on the company's part though it will anger some of its most loyal fans.
