The Z97 chipset from Intel is more than enough to play even the best and newest games at full settings, provided you have graphics cards to match, but Intel has an even stronger chipset anyway, since there is no kill like overkill.

The Z97 chipset is what we may as well call the “normal” top-tier motherboard platform, as far as Intel's product line goes in any event.

Not that AMD has even bothered to challenge Intel on that level. It is more than comfortable on the mainstream front, where its APUs can show their advantages.

However, even with its status secure on the high-end market, Intel insists on perpetuating one that exists a step above even that.

That's why the X99 chipset exists and why its predecessors have existed. Same goes for the Extreme Edition Core-series CPUs that pair with them.
MSI has just released motherboards based on both chipsets
Micro-Star International could have launched either one of its two new motherboards alone. It could even have put their releases far apart. Pacing sometimes draws more consumers in the long run.

It didn't, though. The company chose to go with the maximum shock and awe factor, so it released both the X99S GAMING 9 ACK and Z97 GAMING 9 ACK motherboards at the same time.

The “ACK” in the name stands for the ACK powered by Killer DoubleShot Pro wireless networking card, which combined with Ethernet LAN can transfer data over-the-air at a speed of up to 1.876 Gbps.

And yes, we do mean teaming. Smart Teaming. A technology that allows a PC to use both Wi-Fi and wired connections at the same time, hence the high throughput rate we mentioned above.

The network technology also makes sure that, when a game is running, said game gets all the cable LAN to itself, leaving the rest of the PC (background web browsers, torrent programs, etc.) to use the Wi-Fi radios. This minimizes latency about as much as you can hope for.

Add to that the fact that Wireless ACK Killer has 2.9x times faster data throughput compared to traditional Wireless-N solutions and 3.5x times lower latency than other Wi-Fi solutions, and there is no way the technology will be at fault for you getting taken out by potshots in a shooting match.
Availability and pricing
The MSI X99S GAMING 9 ACK and Z97 GAMING 9 ACK motherboards should be up for sale soon enough, but availability and pricing details are still unavailable. Needless to say, the top-level audio, memory, and storage support won't make them any more affordable than the super networking tech does.

MSI, world leading in motherboard technology, is pleased to announce its release of the MSI X99S GAMING 9 ACK and Z97 GAMING 9 ACK motherboard. Introducing the true wireless gaming solution, ACK powered by Killer DoubleShot Pro delivers 3.5x times lower latency and 2.9x times faster data throughput compared to traditional Wireless-N solutions. Killer Smart Teaming allows the use of LAN and WI-FI at the same time with speeds up to 1.867 Gbps and the ability to process gaming activity through LAN and other internet activity through Wi-Fi for the best lag-free gaming experience. Together with smart applications which allow you to control your bandwidth, MSI ACK is the one and only true wireless GAMING solution.

Team up for the best online gaming experience. Part of Smart Teaming, the Killer Network Manager channels internet gaming traffic in a unique way by separating gaming network activity from other application network activity and adds the next step in online gaming making sure all gaming traffic is processed over LAN and other activity over WI-FI. Smart Teaming also lets you experience the benefit in terms of speed from teaming up LAN bandwidth with Wi-Fi bandwidth adding up to a whopping 1.876 Gbps.

Lowest latency with blistering speeds
Enjoy the best possible online gaming experience at the lowest latency while downloading at the highest speeds. Wireless AC Killer has 2.9x times faster data throughput compared to traditional Wireless-N solutions. The biggest advantage, just like Killer LAN, is lower latency when gaming. Killer WI-FI has up to 3.5x times lower latency than other WI-FI solutions.

MSI X99 & Z97 GAMING engineered to perfection
Inheriting true GAMING DNA, years of building the best motherboards, closely working with world's best gamers and collecting over 300 awards from worldwide media, MSI proudly presents the next generation of GAMING motherboards. MSI X99 & Z97 GAMING motherboard comes equipped with the evolution of the best on-board audio solution called Audio Boost 2, Killer networking through LAN & WI-FI and support for Turbo M.2 32 Gb/s (Z97 standard M.2) and SATA Express (X99 models only) devices together with other key gaming features.

Its masterpiece is Streaming Engine, featured on MSI X99S GAMING 9 ACK, which is a dedicated onboard hardware streaming solution for streaming gaming activities at 1080p 60Mbps without impacting FPS. While the icing on the cake for the Z97 GAMING 9 ACK motherboard is Xtreme Audio DAC, a premium Hi-Fi sound card, delivering 192kHz / 32-Bit 120dB SNR bit-perfect audio quality, onboard, featuring premium audio components such as a C-Media HD Audio Processor, Wolfson WM8741 DAC and Texas Instruments TPA6120A2 amplifier. Get into the next level, get into GAMING.
