The scam is not associated with the legitimate Lotto Max Canadian lottery, and its sole purpose is to trick users into giving away their personal information.
How Does the Max-Lotto Email Scam Work?
The scam starts with an unsolicited email, often with the subject line “Max-L-winner” or something similar. The email falsely claims that the recipient’s email address was randomly selected from 50,000 individual email addresses, resulting in a prize of 850 thousand USD.
An image file is attached to the email, which is a “Lottery processing form” that the recipient must fill out. This form requests personal information, such as full name, date of birth, occupation, country, state, address, phone number, and additional data like sex, marital status, and ZIP/Postcode. Furthermore, it asks for sensitive banking information, including bank name, account number, SWIFT code, address, and telephone and fax numbers.
Recipients are instructed to scan the completed form and send it back within seven days, or they will forfeit their winnings.
