Piratium Browser is an adware program that pretends to be the Google Chrome browser but is instead a customized version of the open-source Chromium web browser project from Google.

Piratium Browser adware

Piratium Browser is commonly bundled with other free programs that you download off of the Internet. Unfortunately, some free downloads do not adequately disclose that other software will also be installed and you may find that you have installed Piratium Browser without your knowledge.

The developers behind Piratium Browser used the Chromium open-source project to compile a Chrome look-alike that has the additional features of inserting and overlaying advertisements into web sites and displaying pop-up windows with annoying video ads. To make matters worse, when the Piratium Browser is installed it will configure itself to be the default browser for web sites and for .gif, .htm, .html, .jpeg, .jpg, .pdf, .png, .shtml, .webp, .xht, and .xhtml documents.

When installed, most people will use Piratium Browser thinking it’s the normal Chrome browser. The difference is that while using it, Piratium Browser will inject advertisements onto web sites that you visit.
The Piratium Browser advertisements will have different text under the pop-up: “Powered by Piratium Browser“, “Brought to you by Piratium Browser“, “You’ve received a premium offer from Piratium Browser” or “Ads by Piratium Browser“.

You should always pay attention when installing software because often, a software installer includes optional installs, such as this Piratium Browser adware. Be very careful what you agree to install.
Always opt for the custom installation and deselect anything that is not familiar, especially optional software that you never wanted to download and install in the first place. It goes without saying that you should not install software that you don’t trust.
