How to Stay Safe Online

Here are 10 basic security tips to help you avoid malware and protect your device:

  1. Use a good antivirus and keep it up-to-date.

    Shield Guide

It's essential to use a good quality antivirus and keep it up-to-date to stay ahead of the latest cyber threats. We are huge fans of Malwarebytes Premium and use it on all of our devices, including Windows and Mac computers as well as our mobile devices. Malwarebytes sits beside your traditional antivirus, filling in any gaps in its defenses, and providing extra protection against sneakier security threats.

  2. Keep software and operating systems up-to-date.

    updates-guide

Keep your operating system and apps up to date. Whenever an update is released for your device, download and install it right away. These updates often include security fixes, vulnerability patches, and other necessary maintenance.

  3. Be careful when installing programs and apps.

    install guide

Pay close attention to installation screens and license agreements when installing software. Custom or advanced installation options will often disclose any third-party software that is also being installed. Take great care in every stage of the process and make sure you know what it is you're agreeing to before you click "Next."

  4. Install an ad blocker.

    Ad Blocker

Use a browser-based content blocker, like AdGuard. Content blockers help stop malicious ads, Trojans, phishing, and other undesirable content that an antivirus product alone may not stop.

  5. Be careful what you download.

    Trojan Horse

A top goal of cybercriminals is to trick you into downloading malware—programs or apps that carry malware or try to steal information. This malware can be disguised as an app: anything from a popular game to something that checks traffic or the weather.

  6. Be alert for people trying to trick you.

    warning sign

Whether it's your email, phone, messenger, or other applications, always be alert and on guard for someone trying to trick you into clicking on links or replying to messages. Remember that it's easy to spoof phone numbers, so a familiar name or number doesn't make messages more trustworthy.

  7. Back up your data.

    backup sign

Back up your data frequently and check that your backup data can be restored. You can do this manually on an external HDD/USB stick, or automatically using backup software. This is also the best way to counter ransomware. Never connect the backup drive to a computer if you suspect that the computer is infected with malware.

  8. Choose strong passwords.

    lock sign

Use strong and unique passwords for each of your accounts. Avoid using personal information or easily guessable words in your passwords. Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) on your accounts whenever possible.

  9. Be careful where you click.

    cursor sign

Be cautious when clicking on links or downloading attachments from unknown sources. These could potentially contain malware or phishing scams.

  10. Don't use pirated software.

    Shady Guide

Avoid using Peer-to-Peer (P2P) file-sharing programs, keygens, cracks, and other pirated software that can often compromise your data, privacy, or both.

To avoid potential dangers on the internet, it's important to follow these 10 basic safety rules. By doing so, you can protect yourself from many of the unpleasant surprises that can arise when using the web.

  1. Sure why not!Emsisoft is a good on-demand scanner….. If you have the time, then do it.
Also I would recommend that you go a ESET scan :

ESET Online Scanner Download Link (This link will automatically download ESET Online Scanner on your computer.)
    2. Double click on the Eset installer program (esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe).
    3. Check Yes, I accept the Terms of Use
    4. Click the Start button.
    5. Check Scan archives

    7. ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
    8. When the scan completes, push Finish

Waiting for your reply to see how everything is running…. Good luck!

  2. Your proceedure worked perfectly. After I ran unhide, I was able to access and revert to a previous system configuration by utilizing a restore point created prior to the last security update. Compuyer then ran fine & normal After that I ran the Rogue killer and it found some (4) registry entries to address. I want to do a complete job on this. Do you recommend running the Emsisoft program as added insurance of complete malware removal?

  3. Stelian Sir I am forever in your debt. Was using the puter this am when the browser just shut down…. decided to reboot cause it was acting a little funky and I then found out why. S.M.A.R.T Check came up and I was at a lost. Pulled out the laptop, Googled SMART Check and yours was the first that came up… some 4 hours later (I ran MalwareBytes twice because it froze the first time) and my desktop is back to normal! As one poster said earlier I wish I could buy you a coffee (or a beer as I am Canadian ;-) ). Added you on Google+ as a friend. :)

    Thank you SO much!!

  4. I got this attack on my computer and like everyone else it simply took over the whole machine. We decided to follow your steps in removing this virus. We followed each step carefully and allowed the PC to do it’s thing “IN IT’S OWN TIME” the results was fantastic when we got to the unhide stage to see all the files and icons return was such a joy and relief. We can’t thank you enough for allowing people like ourselves the confidence to attempt such a task and to get a 100% result. You are a good man, it took a while maybe because my main harddrive is a 2tb but also the computer seems to run a lot faster as well. Thank you once again Stelian and good luck with everything you do. Richard Gardener

  6. I went through your instructions and it seemed I got rid of the virus 3 days ago. However, now it seems the ‘S.M.A.R.T Check’ virus has changed into simply the ‘Check’ virus… I’ll explain.

Everything appears the same as in your images above except that the program title doesn’t say ‘S.M.A.R.T Check’, it now says ‘Check’. But it’s not just this name difference that sets them apart. This new version will not allow me to complete the first step in this guide, changing the proxy. The first time around (3 days ago) with the ‘S.M.A.R.T Check’ I was able to restart my computer in smart mode with networking and fix the proxy issues. Now with this ‘Check’ version, it won’t allow me to do that at all. I am using my Mac desktop to write this right now, the virus is on my windows 7 laptop.

I didn’t go out and download anything to cause this so I must have a program on my computer that goes out and sources this virus from the internet or something… I don’t know, maybe that makes sense. Obviously not a techie.

I’m at a complete loss on how to fix this one…

  7. Thank you so much Stelian!
Your guide really helped me. My Computer is finally back to normal again. :)

Now i’m only wondering how i got the “infection” in the first place? :S
    // Tobbe from Sweden

  8. You should have your own app or icon for my desktop- brilliant instructions! This saved a lot of data on my hard drive I was about to give up on – thanks so much!

  9. I wish you would also write a guide as to how to get rid of those Window’s Genuine Advantage notifications. I can’t do that either and since the IT guy fixed my computer last year they pop up every time I start my computer and I can’t update anything.

  10. OMG, I cannot express the depth of my gratitude to you for carefully outlining this strategy Stelian! I am the most un -tech savvy person there is and I followed your instructions to a “T” and it WORKED! Your explicit instructions, the screen shots and all the options and the thoroughness of your fix were perfect for someone who had no idea about what she’s doing. When this vicious thing took over my computer I was ready to take it to an IT guy I used last year when a similar thing happened but as luck would have it he just left for a month long vacation so I was forced to try and fix this on my own and I did it in two days in about 4 hours! You are en excellent teacher! I did have a few problems along the way, I was unable to use hitmanpro in safe mode, the bottom was cut off and I was unable to click on the next option to run it. When I tried to run it in normal mode that too was impossible because the virus blocked everything I tried to do and even attacked me with another virus in the midst of all of it, the blekko redirect virus. After that, I had to try and figure out how to get rid of that one too which seems to be gone now as well. Anyhoo, I went back into safe mode, did everything except hitmanpro, and that stabilized things to the point where I could go into normal mode and run hitmanpro but the hitmanpro had to be my last step after everything else was stabilized. I cannot thank you enough, I wish I could bake you a cake or something or buy your Starbucks for you for a month. You saved me about 150 to $200 buy doing this on my own.! I have now downloaded Kaspersky pure and I really hope that this protects me better than the free antivirus stuff I was using. Thank you again Stelian! You have been a lifesaver!

  17. Hi. I followed the instructions through Step 4. Malwarebytes found 5 infections and I chose to remove all. When I rebooted in order to start Step 5 the S.M.A.R.T. warnings started again. In Step 3, RKill ran fine with no fake warnings. However, the log file indicated that it did not terminate any processes like expected in your screen shot. Should I try again? Any other tips? Thanks.

  18. I tryed the Safe with Prompt, but the file Shell is with the right address (explorer.exe). So I’m gonna try Dr Web Cure it or Kaspersky Rescue CD… But my hopes are going lower…

  19. Dear Stelian,
the problem is that I cannot do anything in NORMAL, because the ransomware appears before I can do anything, and after that it’s impossibile to interact. People suggest to try LIVE CD of OS or Dr.Web Cure it. Do you have any more simple suggestion? Thanx a lot for your support! God bless you!

  33. I downloaded malwarebytes, but it fails the install with an Access denied error after most of the app was installed. It then rolls back the changes and aborts the install.

Also, rkill doesn’t seem to be killing anything, according to the report that it sends out at the end. It’s blank.

  34. Everything’s worked so far, until I got to roguekiller. I click on your link and after I click RUN my computer marks it as dangerous because it is “unsigned by owner”, and will only allow me to cancel.

  35. Thank you. You saved my week. Your directions were very easy to follow and worked perfectly.

  36. THANK YOU!!! Pretty sure I got the virus after I clicked a picture on Pinterest, which I will NO longer use. You saved the day & $$$ I would’ve spent at a computer repair store.

  39. Damn, whoever wrote this virus did a GREAT job! Now go F yourself for ruining my afternoon.
