The Start.search.us.com infection is used to boost advertising revenue, as in the use of blackhat SEO, to inflate a site’s page ranking in search results.

Start.search.us.com it’s technically not a virus, but it does exhibit plenty of malicious traits, such as rootkit capabilities to hook deep into the operating system, browser hijacking, and in general just interfering with the user experience. The industry generally refers to it as a “PUP,” or potentially unwanted program.

Start.search.us.com got on your computer after you have installed a freeware software (video recording/streaming, download-managers or PDF creators) that had bundled into their installation this browser hijacker. This infection is also bundled within the custom installer on many download sites (examples: CNET, Brothersoft or Softonic), so if you have downloaded a software from these websites, chances are that Start.search.us.com hijack was installed during the software setup process.

For example, when you install VPlay, you will also agree to change your default browser homepage and default search engine to Start.search.us.com., and install the Search.us.com Toolbar.

STEP 1 : Uninstall WebWebWeb malicious programs from your computer

In this first step, we will try to identify and remove any malicious program that might be installed on your computer.

  1. To uninstall the malicious program responsible for the Start.search.us.com redirect from Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7, click the Start button, then click on the Control Panel menu option.

  3. When the Programs and Features or the Uninstall a Program screen is displayed, scroll through the list of currently installed programs and uninstall Search.us, Search.us Toolbar and any other recently installed unknown program from your computer.
    To view the most recently installed programs, you can click on the “Installed On” column to sort your program by the installation date. Scroll though the list, and uninstall any unwanted or unknown programs.

    Depending on what program has installed the Start.search.us.com adware infection, the above program may have a different name or not be installed on your computer. If you cannot find any unwanted or unknown programs on your machine, then you can proceed with the next step.

  4. When Internet Explorer has completed its task, click on the “Close” button in the confirmation dialogue box. You will now  need to close your browser, and then you can open Internet Explorer again.

Remove Start.search.us.com virus from Mozilla Firefox

If you’re having problems with Firefox, resetting it can help. The reset feature fixes many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information like bookmarks, passwords, web form auto-fill information, browsing history and open tabs.

  1. In the upper-right corner of the Firefox window, click the Firefox menu button ([Image: Firefox Menu button]), the click on the “Help” ([Image: Firefox Help button]) button.

  2. From the Help menu, choose Troubleshooting Information.

  3. Click the “Reset Firefox” button in the upper-right corner of the “Troubleshooting Information” page.

  4. To continue, click on the “Reset Firefox” button in the new confirmation window that opens.

  5. Firefox will close itself and will revert to its default settings. When it’s done, a window will list the information that was imported. Click on the “Finish“.

Note: Your old Firefox profile will be placed on your desktop in a folder named “Old Firefox Data“. If the reset didn’t fix your problem you can restore some of the information not saved by copying files to the new profile that was created. If you don’t need this folder any longer, you should delete it as it contains sensitive information.

Remove Start.search.us.com virus from Google Chrome

  1. Remove Start.search.us.com extensions from Google Chrome.
    Click the Chrome menu Chrome menu  button on the browser toolbar, select Tools and then click on Extensions.

    In the Extensions tab, remove (by clicking on the Recycle Bin) Search.us.com Toolbar and any other unknown extensions from Google Chrome.
    Basically, if you not have installed an extension, you should remove it from your web browser.

  2. Set Google Chrome default search engine from start.search.us.com to Google.
    Click the Chrome menu Chrome menu  button, then select Settings and click on Manage search engines in the Search section.
    In the Search Engines dialog that appears, select Google and click the Make Default button that appears in the row.

    Search for Search (http://start.search.us.com) in the Search Engines list, and click the X button that appears at the end of the row.

  3. Change Google Chrome homepage from Start.search.us.com to its default.
    Search.us has modified your Google Chrome settings to open their webpage whenever you start your browser, so we will need to revert this modification.
    Click the Chrome menu Chrome menu  button, then select Settings and click on One the New Tab page in the On Startup section.

STEP 3: Remove Start.search.us.com browser hijacker with AdwCleaner

The AdwCleaner utility will scan your computer and web browser for malicious files, adware browser extensions and registry keys, that may have been installed on your computer without your knowledge.

  1. You can download AdwCleaner utility from the below link.

  2. Before starting AdwCleaner, close all open programs and internet browsers, then double-click on the AdwCleaner icon.

    If Windows prompts you as to whether or not you wish to run AdwCleaner, please allow it to run.
  3. When the AdwCleaner program will open, click on the “Scan” button as shown below.

  4. To remove the “Start.search.us.com” malicious files that were detected in the previous step, please click on the “Clean” button.

  5. Malwarebytes Anti-Malware will now check for updates, and if there are any, you will need to click on the “Update Now” button.

  6. Malwarebytes Anti-Malware will now start scanning your computer for the Start.search.us.com virus. When Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is scanning it will look like the image below.

  7. When the scan has completed, you will now be presented with a screen showing you the malware infections that Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware has detected.     Can you please browse to C:Program Files and find the Search.us folder. In there, it should be an application called “uninstall.exe”… Double-click on it. This should bring up the uninstaller for this program.
