They create a fake refund or fake security process<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once the scammer has access, they may use one of two common scripts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first is the \u201crefund\u201d script. They claim they are refunding money to the victim, but then say there was a mistake. For example, they may claim they accidentally refunded $5,000 instead of $500 and pressure the victim to send the difference back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second is the \u201csecure your money\u201d script. They claim the victim\u2019s funds are at risk and must be moved to a safe account, verified wallet, temporary account, or protected transfer location.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both stories are fake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The FTC describes similar refund scams where fake support agents claim an error occurred and then demand repayment through gift cards, wire transfers, bank transfers, cryptocurrency, or payment apps.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. They try to steal bank and account information<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The scammer may ask the victim to open their bank account, Robinhood account, email account, or payment apps while screen sharing is active.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They may try to capture:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Robinhood login details<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Two-factor authentication codes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bank account numbers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Debit card or credit card details<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Social Security number<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Email login credentials<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Password reset codes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Crypto wallet information<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Payment app access<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Identity verification documents<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They may also tell the victim not to touch the mouse, not to close the laptop, or not to talk to anyone else. They demand gift cards<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In many cases, the scammer eventually asks the victim to buy gift cards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They may claim gift cards are needed to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Reverse the transaction.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pay a temporary verification fee.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Balance an accidental refund.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stop the withdrawal.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Unlock the account.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Prove the victim owns the account.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pay a security deposit.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Complete a refund process.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They may keep the victim on the phone while they drive to Walmart, Target, CVS, Walgreens, Best Buy, Apple, or another store. They may tell the victim not to tell the cashier what is happening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is a major scam indicator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The FTC states that only scammers tell people to buy gift cards and give them the numbers from the back of the cards. No real business or government agency will demand payment by gift card.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">8. The scammers disappear<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once the scammer gets the gift card numbers, bank transfer, crypto payment, or account access, they may keep pushing for more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the victim questions the situation, the scammer may become aggressive.
