We recently started looking into various ad and parental control options. Adguard Family DNS seems to work fairly well for blocking ads, but they only block porn, not other inappropriate sites (like bikini or lingerie). So, we tried out OpenDNS and set up those filters. It blocked those sites well, but doesn't block ads or force safesearch. It seems like we need both or a different option, but none seem to do everything we want. Our router only has two lines for DNS servers and if I'm understanding correctly, it will only go to the second one if there's a problem with the first, is that right? Is there a way to set up Adguard DNS and OpenDNS to run simultaneously? We want to set it up for our whole network.

If setting both up isn't possible, do you know of any other DNS services that will block ads, offer custom filters, and force safesearch? I've read a little about Pi-Hole, but that seems more complicated than we want to deal with if there's an easier way.

Setting up a pi-hole is very quick.

I would not block inappropriate sites via pi-hole, only advertising. You could visit the admin panel per week and have a look at the called domains. If you find something "bad", you could do a lot more with a conversation. That's all I'd intervene.

And besides, such things also belong to getting older, so trust the child.
Such blocks are useless. Maybe just a little checking, like I described with the pi-hole. ;)

I must stick with @askalan opinion here. Unless your children are into deep dangerous stuff, there's nothing useful into restricting their browsing activity. I may understand a parental control to limit the time they're online but they always find ways to search what they're looking for. Trust me sir, I've been there. I've been a child on the internet era. And I'm a perfectly normal man.

As for making their browsing experience a little nicer by blocking drug and guns related sites/ads, there are several applications to do so, such as AdGuard or many antivirus software. This may be a better ideal software, taking into account there are many ways to locally bypass a DNS.
