Play Protect certified devices go through a rigorous security review and compatibility testing process, performed by Google, to ensure user data and app information are kept safe. They also come from the factory with our Google Play Protect software, which provides protection against the device being compromised.

This has been our long-standing approach to user security and privacy and is applied consistently across all device manufacturers.

Because of the government restrictions described above, new Huawei device models made available to the public after May 16, 2019 have not been able to go through this security process nor will they have Play Protect preloaded. As a result, they are considered “uncertified,” and will not be able to utilize Google’s apps and services.

In addition, sideloaded Google apps will not work reliably because we do not allow these services to run on uncertified devices where security may be compromised. Sideloading Google’s apps also carries a high risk of installing an app that has been altered or tampered with in ways that can compromise user security.

To check if your device is certified, open the Google Play Store app on your Android phone, tap “Menu” and look for “Settings.” You will see if your device is certified under “Play Protect certification.” You can learn more on android.com/certified.

To be perfectly honest, it's not that Play Protect has protected you so much from installing malicious apps on certified devices.

Most probably don't understand why Google said this, and jump to conclusions about Play Protect.

Devices that are Play Protect certified:

• Include proprietary apps under license from Google
• Have passed Android compatibility testing

Only Play Protect certified devices are eligible to include Google apps, like the Google Play Store app.

If your device is not Play Protect certified, Google doesn’t have a record of the Android compatibility test results.
Keep in mind that:

• Devices that aren't Play Protect certified may not be secure.
• Devices that aren't Play Protect certified may not get Android system updates, or app updates.
• Google apps on devices that aren't Play Protect certified aren't licensed and may not be real Google apps.
• Apps and features on devices that aren't Play Protect certified may not work correctly.
• Data on devices that aren't Play Protect certified may not back up securely.

I think your correct @Outpost , and even if Play Protect is weak, it at least helps warn users about those apps that gets reported. That's of course a very poor comfort after one got infected. Most would prefer a block, before. It's a general platform issue anyway and a main reason why I personal not rely too much on Play Protect as the only security layer.

Here's a very good example on how Play Protect works on a malicious app that very recent been in the news even here on MT.

But, the main topic seems more about Huawei and that Google try advice users with new Huawei devices not do so called " side loading " of Google apps. According to Googles statement it's supposed " not work reliably ", but I got no idea and haven't seen any news on that. @HarborFront usually spot/see things like that fast.

Generally, most apps work well with sideloading. However, some users of HW phones may face some issues. Such apps may not work or don't work well.

I would think so since Google is sideloaded. So far the phone has been working well but Netflix cannot even be downloaded. Internet banking apps seems to work properly. So far so good. Heard some bank application will check. Google pay working?
