If a new report is anything to go by, Apple is getting ready to abandon a series of older iPhones with the release of iOS 13 the next September.

Apple leaving behind older iPhone models with new iOS updates is something the company does occasionally, albeit this didn’t happen last year when the Cupertino-based tech giant rolled out iOS 12.

The latest version of iOS supports the same iPhone models as iOS 11, so bigger changes appear to be planned for the September update.

French website iPhoneSoft claims the models being targeted by Apple’s change of mind are iPhone 5s, iPhone SE, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus.

iPhone SE still up for grabs
While at some level this makes sense, you should still take this report with a healthy dose of skepticism because of a series of details.

For example, Apple giving up on the iPhone SE this year doesn’t make much sense, as the company has restarted sales of this 4-inch iPhone several times throughout 2019, most likely to clear out inventory. So leaving new customers without software support after only a few months since they purchased their devices could lead to more frustration among buyers.

On the other hand, Apple might indeed be planning to ditch 4-inch iPhones and focus on larger models, albeit this means the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus should continue to be supported.

When it comes to the iPad, the cited source claims Apple wants to discontinue the iPad mini 2 and the iPad Air.

Without a doubt, Apple will give up on older iPhones at some point in the future, but I’m not sure doing it for so many models this year is the right way to go, especially the iPhone SE for the reason I detailed above. It remains to be seen if this is accurate, but further info could land next month at the WWDC conference.

Wow. 5 years of updates. There's nothing like that on the Android side unfortunately. Not even the Pixels get more than 3 years of updates.

Deep integration between software and hardware allows Apple to do this. Google, just like M$, have to accomodate for all kind of configurations and OEMs also fux them up more with bloats and security flaws, so even security update up to 2 years is a stretch for Google and ofc they can't offer to split out a team dedicated to optimize the software for pixel.

Yes that poor megacorporation can't find the money to commit to their own hardware. Microsoft will support the original Surface until 2023. It came out in 2012. Google is just a mess that can't commit when it comes to Android. Surprisingly, Chromebooks get 5 years of automatic updates though...

Apple is the only company that makes money out of phones nowadays and most chinese barebones like Clevo or tong fang take up PC market share as well. 5 yrs is still good on iPhone while on Android even with custom ROMs they get superseded faster with newer budget models.

True, Google is a mess overall, they can't seriously commit money to anything. Just look at google social network and texting apps for examples. But I think 3 years update for Pixels is actually planned obsolescence from Google because of competitions from Android devices market.

Chromebook is different, hardware deeply integrated with software due to bootloader restriction and Google not allowing OEMs tampering with it (also if you noticed, the number of devices supporting latest ChromeOS is even less than 100, which is very much manageable), also it's Google who provides drivers for the Chromebooks, which, just like Surface, give them more chance to optimize the OS and able to keep supporting for a longer lifespan (also, Chromebooks absolutely destroy Apple/M$ in "netbook" market so they don't even have to care about competitions)

The 5S still gets updates from 2013, the only reason the other 5's aren't is because they are 32-bit.
