Apple will cancel or postpone mass production for the planned 2024 iPhone SE 4, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said today in a series of tweets. Kuo said that he believes Apple will delay or scrap the device due to consistent lower than expected shipments of middle tier and lower-end smartphones like the ‌iPhone SE‌ 3, the iPhone 13 mini, and the iPhone 14 Plus.

Kuo also said that the full screen design that Apple has in mind for the ‌iPhone SE‌ 4 will require higher costs and selling prices, so Apple may need to "reconsider the product positioning and return on investment" for the ‌iPhone SE‌ 4. Reducing unnecessary product development costs will also help Apple navigate the "challenges of the global economic recession in 2023," according to Kuo.

They could just launch it with the old design and postphone the new design

just like Chinese phones can sell for 200$ with oleds and bigger screen

apple can sell old ips small screen phone for 400$

and apple has more volume and gets better deals usually plus they make their own soc etc

so production cost shouldn’t be higher then a phone sold for 200$ today on Chinese markets like alibaba

apple could have 50%+ margins with an SE
Makes no business sense to cancel it maybe opposite getting some cheap lcd model with a new design taking a hit of 20%+ margins only
and selling for 249$ Would make a great sense since most profits are software and to grow apple needs to get the peasants into their ecosystem and services even if they have a bit less margins

Apple has informed suppliers that it has canceled plans to release a fourth-generation iPhone SE in 2024, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. Kuo previously said that the fourth-generation iPhone SE would be canceled or postponed, but he now firmly believes that the device has been canceled. In a post on Medium today, Kuo said that Apple planned to introduce its first in-house 5G chip in the fourth-generation iPhone SE, but that is obviously no longer expected to happen since the device is apparently canceled. Instead, Kuo said it is likely that Apple will continue to rely on Qualcomm for 5G chips in 2024, including for the iPhone 16 series.
Kuo said Apple planned to test the 5G chip in the iPhone SE before rolling it out to iPhone 16 models to ensure that real-world performance was acceptable: "Due to concerns that the performance of the in-house baseband chip may not be up to par with Qualcomm's, Apple initially planned to launch its baseband chip in 2024 and let the low-end iPhone SE 4 adopt it first, and decide whether to let the iPhone 16 use its baseband chip depending on the development status of iPhone SE 4. However, the cancelation of the iPhone SE 4 has significantly increased the chances of Qualcomm remaining the exclusive supplier of baseband chips for the 2024 new iPhone 16 series, which is better than the market consensus that Qualcomm would start losing iPhone orders in 2024."

After having "multiple conversations" with companies within Apple's supply chain this week, Barclays analysts Blayne Curtis and Tom O'Malley believe that Apple is unlikely to release a fourth-generation iPhone SE in 2024.

In a research note shared with MacRumors, the analysts said Apple's decision not to launch a new iPhone SE next year could indicate that the company's rumored in-house 5G modem will not be ready any time soon, which would benefit Apple's existing iPhone modem supplier Qualcomm. Apple has reportedly been planning its own modem since at least 2018, and acquired the majority of Intel's smartphone modem business in 2019.

In April, TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said mass production of Apple's modem would begin in 2025 at the earliest, suggesting that even iPhone 16 models launching later next year will continue to use Qualcomm modems.

Chinese display manufacturers are now bidding to supply Apple with OLED displays for the fourth-generation iPhone SE, ITHome reports.

Suppliers, including Tianma, are currently seeking to obtain orders from Apple for AMOLED panels suitable for the fourth-generation ‌iPhone SE‌. Tianma would be a secondary supplier, since a bigger manufacturer like BOE is likely to take the lion's share of orders. Apple staff responsible for panel procurement reportedly visited several major OLED panel factories in China in the first half of 2023 in relation to the ‌iPhone SE‌.

According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the fourth-generation ‌iPhone SE‌ will feature a 6.1-inch OLED display with a design similar to the iPhone 14. It is also expected to sport Apple's long-rumored custom 5G modem. The device is not expected to launch until 2025.

Significant changes are expected to arrive with Apple's fourth-generation iPhone SE, in terms of both design and hardware, MacRumors has learned.

The ‌iPhone SE‌ 4, known internally under the codename Ghost, is expected to receive a new design derived almost entirely from the base model iPhone 14. According to our sources, the ‌iPhone SE‌ 4 will use a modified version of the ‌iPhone 14‌ chassis and will even maintain ‌iPhone 14‌ test parameters for internal testing.

As far as the chassis is concerned, two major changes are expected – an Action button and a USB-C port. The Action button, recently debuted on the iPhone 15 Pro, is a multi-purpose button which replaces the mute switch on newer iPhone models. It can be configured to perform a variety of actions, depending on the user's preference.

The ‌iPhone SE‌ 4 is also set to receive a USB-C port in order to comply with upcoming European Union regulations. Our sources have seen extensive references to the E85 connector, which is what Apple calls USB-C internally. Apart from these two major differences, no significant changes are planned for the chassis compared to the ‌iPhone 14‌, and it will likely not feature the curved edges of the iPhone 15 lineup.

As for the back of the device, the next ‌iPhone SE‌ will feature a single camera with the flash aligned in an arrangement similar to the third-generation ‌iPhone SE‌. The exact design of the camera bump, however, remains unclear at the time of writing. Apple has developed at least five different designs for the camera bump, with minor differences among them. They fall into two major categories:
  • Camera and flash encompassed in a single, oblong-shaped camera bump
  • Only the camera ring raised from the main backplate surface
Preliminary information suggests that the ‌iPhone SE‌ 4 may feature a 48-megapixel rear camera, providing for a significant upgrade from the current model.

The ‌iPhone SE‌ 4 will also likely receive a new OLED panel, derived from the ‌iPhone 14‌. The device will not feature a Touch ID home button, but will instead have Face ID as the means of biometric identification. Multiple references to "Pearl," Apple's internal codename for ‌Face ID‌ and associated hardware, have been spotted in relation to the fourth-generation ‌iPhone SE‌.

Apple is also working on an in-house 5G modem, codenamed “Sinope”, and is using the ‌iPhone SE‌ 4 to test the new hardware. Current information suggests that the new modem is being tested on the ‌iPhone SE‌ 4 and a derivative of the ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌ Max, known as "D84S." Originally, the new 5G modem was meant to make its debut with the iPhone 16 lineup, being available across the entire range. According to information from our sources, this may no longer be the case. Additionally, Qualcomm recently issued a press release stating that the company would be providing smartphone modems for Apple until 2026.

Previous claims have suggested that Apple was developing the ‌iPhone SE‌ 4 exclusively for modem testing, and that it was not intended for mass production or release to the general public. This theory seems unlikely, as it does not explain the amount of effort put into the overall design of the device including multiple camera bump iterations, as well as part changes.

If the ‌iPhone SE‌ 4 had been intended exclusively for modem testing, this likely would not necessitate a camera redesign or the inclusion of an Action button. From a pragmatic point of view, it would make more sense to reuse existing parts with only a minimum amount of modification, as was done with the D84S.

It's worth noting that the information presented here is preliminary, pre-preproduction information. The fourth-generation ‌iPhone SE‌ is still early in the development process, and changes are always possible. As a result, the information may not fully align with the specifications of final mass-production units, assuming the project makes it to this stage.

Following our last in-depth report on the iPhone SE 4, MacRumors has received additional information which further confirms the claims made in our previous article.

The ‌iPhone SE‌ 4, also known by the device identifier D59 and project codename Ghost, is a continuation of Apple’s budget-oriented line of iPhones, and is expected to replace the current third-generation ‌iPhone SE‌.

With the arrival of the fourth-generation ‌iPhone SE‌, Apple plans to finally retire the aging iPhone 8-style design used for the previous two generations of the ‌iPhone SE‌. Instead, the ‌iPhone SE‌ 4 will feature a more modern look and increased display size, closely resembling the base model iPhone 14.

Newly obtained specifications indicate the ‌iPhone SE‌ 4 will use a modified version of the existing ‌iPhone 14‌ chassis, with the same flat design. The dimensions of the ‌iPhone SE‌ 4 in its current stage perfectly match those of the base model ‌iPhone 14‌. Recent findings also confirm that the fourth-generation ‌iPhone SE‌ will not include a Touch ID home button, instead featuring an all-screen design derived from the ‌iPhone 14‌, with Face ID serving as the means of biometric identification.
