The Australian encryption bill seeks access, under the law, to decrypt any encrypted communication which is liable to contain any criminal activity.

The Australian encryption bill has made it crystal clear that any website, social media host, internet company or device manufacturer would face fines of up to $10 million for each case of non-compliance. They would be forced to work along with the law enforcement and aid them in cracking codes or removing any barriers for the government, from their private data.

So there is another law in Australia who will decrypt all the encrypted communications to minimize the criminal activities. A good decision but on other hand, 90% of Aussies who are not criminal they have to sacrifice their privacy at the same time.

Being an Aussie, not looking forward to this. What would happen to those who need to send credit card data over the internet via paypal for example?

And so it begins... the illegalization of encryption. The next logical step will be to make the use of encryption in the commission of a crime a separate criminal act that can be added to the charges. After that happens it is no stretch to define legal and illegal encryption usage in day to day affairs. In some countries, it wouldn't surprise me if the use of even archivers and password-protected files will be a criminal offense. "Encrypted cloud storage ? Come on, you're going to jail buddy..."

Criminal acts need to be dealt with. However, governments everywhere do not want people using encryption. Period. Because it makes their jobs of collecting up evidence difficult. Difficult enough that they want to take it away from law-abiding citizens.

"90% of Aussies who are not criminal" lol I think that number might be a little smaller. I wonder how companies like Apple will react to this. Will they change their encryption on Australian devices?
