Let us inform you that the AVG LinkScanner and AVG Search-Shield support was discontinued. You may use the AVG Secure Search or AVG Secure Search portal instead.

This change was made to improve performance (your computer doesn't have to scan links) and security since links are scanned more often (results are more accurate). AVG Secure Search already scan all links in real-time on server so it is no longer necessary to use AVG add-on in browser.

The Official Reason , that AVG has terminated their Linkscanner , is because Symantec bought the rights to the technology , on which linkscanner whas running.

Where did you get this info? I know AVG bought LinkScanner from Exploit Prevention Labs in 2007- http://www.linkscanner.com/ .

How did Symantec end up with the technology unless AVG sold it to them?

Thanks.:D

It will be not surprising, Norton uses to bought technologies for implementing them on NIS then abandoned the original product.

Yup exactly. Symantec destroyed PC Tools. And the only reason Norton 2009+ versions were good is because of Pctools. Now again Norton has started to sink. May be next aquisition is Kaspersky Labs. It seems AVG secure search is exactly same as lnik scanner. Sushiman can you pls state your source?. Any ways link scanner technology is still available in all AVG products.

Until more info is made public about whether or not Symantec bought the technology used by LinkScanner, we can NOT assume this info to be accurate.

Symantec has been known in the past to buy out other technologies from various security vendors but never tried to hide what they did.

It was made public when they bought out PC Tools, Sygate Firewall, VeriSign, LiveOffice, etc. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_mergers_and_acquisitions_by_Symantec

Don't see why they would try to hide the info about LinkScanner.

Thanks.:D

But AVG wont sell LinkScanner. Its a such a great product. And Symantec already has SafeWeb. Why Linkscanner?

One question, since AVG LinkScanner is being discontinued, I would assume on an update AVG will automatically remove it from their client?

Some more updates: 1. AVG linkscanner users now just see a greybox in the ratings area which urges them to use Safe search.
2. I think paid product users are not affected. Not sure on this one.

It appears that it's still available for download from free.AVG.com

AVG LinkScanner For Mac, http://free.avg.com/gb-en/linkscanner-mac

Windows version redirects to Secure Search, http://www.avg.com/gb-en/secure-search, use Download link above.
