Electronic Arts' next game in its long running Battlefield first person shooter series will move in a completely new direction for the franchise. The publisher announced this week that the game, Battlefield Hardline, won't be a military shooter this time but instead will have a grim and gritty theme as players take on the roles of cops and criminals.

While EA has revealed the title of the game and its basic theme, a leaked trailer showing early gameplay footage has already made its way to the Internet. Xboxygen has posted the over seven minute clip on its DailyMotion page. The trailer refers to the game by its code name "Omaha".

Battlefield Hardline, which is being developed by Visceral Games, will feature players taking on the roles of police officers who will combat highly armed criminals in multiplayer matches, with missions that will include hostage situations, bank robberies and more. The game will also feature a single player campaign where the player will take on the role of a former Miami detective who is going after a criminal organization.

The game will also feature a number of gadgets in addition to firearms, such as smartphones that can be used for detective work, ziplines to traverse over streets and more. EA has yet to reveal which platforms Battlefield Hardline will appear on but it would seem likely it will show up on the Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4 and PC.

Update: Looks like EA got the trailer removed
