Can you use Protonmail with thunderbird and any mobile email client with IMAP ?
The ProtonMail Bridge is an application for paid users that runs on your computer in the background and seamlessly encrypts and decrypts your mail as it enters and leaves your computer. It allows for full integration of your ProtonMail account with any program that supports IMAP and SMTP such as Microsoft Outlook, Mozilla Thunderbird and Apple Mail.
Configure ProtonMail secure email with your favorite IMAP/SMTP email client by using the ProtonMail Bridge application. IMAP instructions here.

I recommend you: Email green, secure, simple and ad-free - posteo.de - (you can pay via real money and a letter)
Can be used with Thunderbird and all other clients, costs 12€ per month and is designed for maximum data security and data privacy. Known in the scene as the best provider, both internationally and in Germany. With PGP encryption you get more security than e.g. Tutanota and Protonmail. You are forced to use the average encryption of ProtonMail and Tutanota. I would advise you against services like Protonmail and Tutanota, which handle the encryption through JavaScript. If you're looking for something free, Mailfence.
Anything else is goot but not the best.

What are some recommendations please? Thanks.

High Security- Startmail (paid), msgsafe.io (free)
Medium Security- Zoho Mail (free)
Lower Security but great service, spam protection, etc. - Fastmail (paid)
Low Security - Yandex (trash email)
Disposable Email - My 10 minute mail · Disposable email address

Overall for the best mix of privacy, security and free Zoho is easily the best free offering IMO. No ads, strong privacy, the company is actively fighting mass surveillance.

Zoho email difficult to crack for National Security Agency
What the US Government Surveillance Programs Mean for Zoho Customers « Zoho Blog

Protonmail and Tutanota are decent free options, but I have some questions about their safety. I didn't like Posteo, the interface was annoying and they have a 'back end' spam protection that will simply delete the emails before they arrive not allowing you to evaluate some spam. I found that incredibly problematic and overreaching.

I have many email accounts and change them out every so often. For my crucial stuff, it's all done using high security providers. For my day to day emailing, Zoho works great. Virtually every junk account and random thing goes to my Fastmail. Misc. games, forums and other crap got to Yandex accounts. Then I make liberal use of disposable email throughout the week.

I have not, and will not ever use Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoomail, etc. I do have keygen random, anonymous Gmail accounts used strictly for Chromebooks or Phones, but never for email interaction.

I stil have my posteo account but I do not use it anymore.
Reason: aggressive spam system! no spam folder, so you can't get your emails.

Protonmail for personal emails, outlook.com for every thing else. Protonmail requires two passwords, one for log in and another for decryption of mail box, if you decide to use protonmail , take special care of those two passwords, i.e. Use complex ones and don't forget those.

This is what killed me on their system.

I worked with their support people and explained that I MUST see my spam, because I get mail from overseas that could appear like spam but has information I need within the spam.. They explained their system won't permit them to pass anything remotely considered spam - on the back end... Meh.. What a horrid system!

Also is email security really that important? Just asking.

Most of us started using isp email in the beginning. How will it help to change to a more secure email system now ?
