Microsoft has changed the terms of service of its Bing Ad network to disallow ads which offer computer support service.

Its Bing Ads User Safety Policy has changed and now states:

Bing Ads disallows the promotion of third party online technical support services to consumers because of serious quality issues that can impact end user safety.

The issue is of course ads like the above which claims your PC is infected. In the vast majority of cases these ads are scams and attempt to take over your computer by themselves installing malware.

Bing is steadily gaining market share in US, where the Microsoft search engine now powers 30% of searches and at Adweek Europe recently Microsoft revealed it now has 18.1% search market share in UK. Bing is embedded in Windows 10, but also powers searches in Siri on the iPhone, Alexa on the Amazon Echo and Kindle tablets, Yahoo searches, Gumtree and is even embedded in Uber. In all Bing now processes more than 15 billion searches per month, making a responsible attitude more than welcome.

A good step in the right direction from Microsoft, but I don't know how much this will help as these scammers usually rely on malicious programs or less known advertising networks to display these ads.
In recent attacks, they moved away from pop-up ads and gone towards installing malicious programs which either lock the computer until you call them or create scheduled tasks to display these scam pop-ups (A weather app with a twist)

Here is the latest "ransomware" type tech-support screen I've seen, in which they've blocked access to the desktop. These scammers have disabled the task manager to prevent the user from terminating the malicious program.
