A rumor claims that the team at Infinity Ward and publisher Activision are exploring the idea of offering both Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 for free to all those who are willing to pick up a copy of the new title associated with the franchise arriving this year.

TheTechGame quotes a credible source as saying that both the video games will be offered via the Xbox One backwards compatibility feature and that they might get some updates to be more appealing to modern gamers.

Activision previously said that it had no plans to create remakes for older Call of Duty titles to run on the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4, which means that offering both Modern Warfare experiences with the new title might be a powerful incentive to get the game on the Microsoft home console.

The platform holder has been encouraging companies to offer older titles with new releases, with Fallout 4 coming with a copy of Fallout 3 while those who get the coming Quantum Break will be able to play the classic Alan Wake games.

Microsoft provided all the Gears of War titles for those who picked up the Xbox One-focused Ultimate Edition of the game.

The new Call of Duty will be revealed during E3 2016
The two Modern Warfare video games were some of the best received by fans of the franchise, and the fact that they will be associated with the new game created by Infinity Ward might be a sign that the developer might be creating an experience that's linked to them in some way.

So far, no concrete information has been revealed about the 2016 Call of Duty, and the two companies are saying that a reveal is being prepared for the E3 2016 event in June.

The team has suggested that it intends to introduce some big changes to the core mechanics and that it has ideas to make the multiplayer more engaging than before.

Until the new Call of Duty is announced and launched, the fan community can still look forward to three new downloadable content packages for Black Ops 3, which should add the customary four new maps as well as a new zombie coop episode.

The franchise has been dominating video game sales for some years, and Activision will be keen to do the same in 2016.
