Carl Pei, the OnePlus co-founder who parted ways with the company last year, has announced the name of his next venture: Nothing. It describes itself as a “London based consumer technology company” and counts the likes of iPod inventor Tony Fadell, Twitch co-founder Kevin Lin, Reddit CEO Steve Huffman, and YouTuber Casey Neistat as investors. It plans to release its first “smart devices” in the first half of this year.

“Nothing’s mission is to remove barriers between people and technology to create a seamless digital future,” says Pei, Nothing’s founder and CEO, in a press release.

Pei’s new company plans to differentiate itself by using “custom made” components in its products right from the start. Pei suggests this will stop Nothing’s products from looking too much like its competitors.

Carl Pei is also the founder of OnePlus smartphone company. Since the day he left the company, OnePlus has gone the hill and now it is just a rebadge of Oppo's phone for the US, UK, and Canada market while Oppo is for Chinese and Europe market. I wonder what he has on the table for us.

New information

9to5Google found recent filings at the UK Intellectual Property Office showing that former Android founder Andy Rubin has signed over ownership of his one-time smartphone entrant Essential to Carl Pei’s Nothing Technologies Limited. This process was completed as of January 6, 2021, with the application actually being made as early as November 11, 2020.

This means that all existing trademarks, logo, and the entire Essential brand are now the intellectual property of Pei’s Alphabet-invested startup, although it is unclear how this affects any of the patents currently held by Essential. While this does not necessarily mean that Nothing is entering the smartphone market, it could be a signal of intent to do so in the not-too-distant future.
