China: mysterious respiratory illness, unexplained viral pneumonia ...
Hong Kong scared.
As China Investigates Mysterious Illness, Hong Kong Steps up Response Though SARS has been ruled out, the scars of the 2002-2003 epidemic continue to linger in Hong Kong.

... As of Sunday, 59 people were diagnosed with the condition and have been isolated while they receive treatment, according to the Wuhan Municipal Health Commission. Seven were in critical condition, while the rest were stable.
The commission said in a statement that initial investigations have ruled out SARS — severe acute respiratory syndrome — as well as Middle East respiratory syndrome, influenza, bird flu, and adenovirus.
The commission previously said the condition’s most common symptom was fever, with shortness of breath and lung infections appearing in a “small number” of cases. There were no clear indications of human-to-human transmission. ...

- So my friends, beware if you are next to bats and camels at the market ...no joke, look:

A preliminary investigation has now identified the respiratory disease as a new type of coronavirus, Chinese state media reported Thursday, citing scientists handling the investigation.
As of Sunday, local authorities reported 59 patients with the illness. Seven were in critical condition, while the rest were stable. Eight were discharged Wednesday night after they didn’t exhibit any more symptoms for several days.
Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that was first identified in humans in the mid-1960s. Some are a cause of the common cold, while others found in bats, camels and other animals have evolved into more severe illnesses, such as SARS and MERS.
Coronaviruses can spread through coughing or sneezing, or by touching an infected person. Common symptoms include a runny nose, headache, cough and fever. Shortness of breath, chills and body aches are associated with more dangerous kinds of coronavirus, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
The Wuhan Municipal Health Commission said some of the infected patients ran businesses in a seafood market that is being suspended and investigated. As the present illness does not not transmit readily between people, it’s possible they were infected by animals at the market.

U.S. to begin health screenings at three airports for cases of novel Chinese virus

U.S. authorities on Friday are set to begin screening travelers arriving in the country from Wuhan, China, amid an ongoing outbreak of a novel (new) viral infection there that has already led to cases among travelers in two other countries.
While the overall risk to people in the United States is low, “we know it’s crucial to be proactive and prepared,” Dr. Nancy Messonnier, the director of CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, said on a call with reporters.
Passengers will be asked about their health and checked for symptoms. People who show symptoms will undergo a secondary screening to determine whether they might have some other respiratory infection — a strong possibility during cold and flu season — or need to be tested for the coronavirus.

The U.S. joins several other countries, primarily in Southeast Asia ...
...two deaths of older patients ...person-to-person spread is possible ...

“There might be more cases...” Messonnier said.

... The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said they were taking a “very cautious” and “proactive” approach, drawing lessons from past outbreaks. The SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) outbreak that arose in China in late 2002 eventually spread to 37 countries and led to nearly 800 deaths.
A preliminary analysis by EcoHealth Alliance, a New York-based research center focused on human and wildlife health, found the Wuhan virus to be “closely related” to the SARS pathogen, called SARS CoV.
The clusters of new cases have triggered alarm in China’s Asian neighbors, prompting Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines to strengthen screening measures ahead of the lunar new year, where many Chinese travelers are expected to fly across Asia...

Health authorities in the Chinese city of Wuhan said another person had died from the recently identified coronavirus infection, bringing the total to four.
It added that 15 medical staff in Wuhan had contracted the virus, confirming that it is spreading by human transmission and raising concerns that people at the most virulent stage of infection – so-called super-spreaders – could infect many others.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) said it would call an emergency meeting on Wednesday to decide whether the outbreak should be declared an international public health emergency....

Hong Kong Chief Secretary Says Government Does Not Take Pneumonia Outbreak Lightly
By Frank Fang, Epoch Times
January 21, 2020 Updated: January 21, 2020

Speaking on behalf of Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam, Chief Secretary Matthew Cheung reaffirmed the city’s commitment to be on high alert in face of the new pneumonia outbreak in China on Jan. 21, saying that the government does not take the health crisis lightly.
Cheung explained that he was stepping in for Lam because the Hong Kong leader was leading a delegation to the World Economic Forum in Davos.
Cheung said that there were now 106 suspected cases in Hong Kong, although none of them have been confirmed to be the new virus originating from the Chinese city of Wuhan.
As of 8 p.m. on Jan. 20, there were a total of 218 patients in China infected with the novel coronavirus. In addition to 198 in Wuhan, five have now been reported in Beijing and 14 in Guangdong Province bordering Hong Kong.
There are four confirmed cases outside of China, two in Thailand, one in Japan, and one in South Korea....

Virus fears spread to global markets
Jan. 21, 2020
Stocks in Hong Kong slumped 2.8% overnight, leading losses across Asia, after Moody's cut its rating for the city to Aa3 from Aa2, citing an "absence of tangible plans to address either the political or economic and social concerns of the Hong Kong population."

The Shanghai Composite index also fell 1.4% on concerns a deadly virus emanating from China will spread through the region as travel heats up for the Lunar New Year holidays.
The coronavirus, which can spread between people, has already killed four (with 218 confirmed cases), and is reminiscent of the SARS epidemic that subtracted an estimated 0.8 percentage point from GDP growth in China in 2003.

Assume lies and cover ups as China’s coronavirus hits the U.S.
As we learned from the SARS epidemic episode in 2003, China must not be trusted with delivering timely information.
On noqreport.com - by Chastity Mansfield
January 21, 2020

China’s government is proud and loathes signs of weakness. They are also in a country that relies more on exports and travel than just about any nation in the world. Add in the fact that they have been secretive and have demonstrated a willingness to lie about internal affairs. This is a combination for disaster when it comes to potential large-scale epidemics like the coronavirus.
Today, it has officially been confirmed in the United States as a traveler from China has been diagnosed.
CDC confirms first US case of coronavirus that has killed 6 in China
A male traveler from China has been diagnosed in Snohomish County, Washington State with the Wuhan coronavirus, according to the CDC. The CDC was expected to make the announcement at a Tuesday afternoon media briefing.
Public health officials have confirmed more than 300 cases of the illness, which has evoked memories of the 2003 outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome in China. Health officials have also confirmed cases in Thailand, South Korea, Japan and Taiwan.
This weekend, the CDC and Homeland Security began screening people traveling to the United States from Wuhan, China, where the outbreak is believed to have started.
This should concern every American as well as those in countries with regular travelers to China (which is most nations) because China has not been known to be forthcoming with their health information. First, they either misunderstood the coronavirus or flat-out lied when they declared early on that it was not transmitted person-to-person but instead was the result of a contamination at a fish market. Then, they downplayed the scope and scale to the international community while internally taking full pandemic precautions to isolate Wuhan where it is believed to have originated.
This could not have come at a worst time of the year; the upcoming Lunar New Year period is the largest annual human migration on Earth. People will be crammed on buses, trains, and planes as they travel to be with family. It’s a recipe for catastrophe that means it could be even worse than the 2003 SARS epidemic...
Precautions are very straightforward, similar to precautions to prevent flu or other viruses from spreading. Doctors say to wash our hands often, avoiding touching eyes, nose, and mouth. Masks are always a benefit, but they may be hard to come by. Online retailers are running out even as some have started to charge premium prices. They’re selling at over 10x the normal rate.
Whatever information we hear from China about the coronavirus, assume it’s even worse. Now that it’s in America, we should all take precautions to prevent it from spreading needlessly. Until it’s handled, we cannot take our chances.

“Snake Pneumonia” – Coronavirus Outbreak in China Traced to Snakes by Genetic Analysis: on scitechdaily.com:

By Wiley January 22, 2020

Snakes Sold at Market

Patients who became infected with the virus were exposed to wildlife animals at a wholesale market, where seafood, poultry, snakes, bats, and farm animals were sold.
Emerging viral infections — from bird flu to Ebola to Zika infections — pose major threats to global public health, and understanding their origins can help investigators design defensive strategies against future outbreaks. A new study provides important insights on the potential origins of the most recent outbreak of viral pneumonia in China, which started in the middle of December and now is spreading to Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, and Japan. The findings are published early online in the Journal of Medical Virology.
The study notes that patients who became infected with the virus — which is a type of virus called a coronavirus and was named 2019-nCoV by the World Health Organization — were exposed to wildlife animals at a wholesale market, where seafood, poultry, snakes, bats, and farm animals were sold.
By conducting a detailed genetic analysis of the virus and comparing it with available genetic information on different viruses from various geographic locations and host species, the investigators concluded that the 2019-nCoV appears to be a virus that formed from a combination of a coronavirus found in bats and another coronavirus of unknown origin. The resulting virus developed a mix or “recombination” of a viral protein that recognizes and binds to receptors on host cells. Such recognition is key to allowing viruses to enter host cells, which can lead to infection and disease.
Finally, the team uncovered evidence that the 2019-nCoV likely resided in snakes before being transmitted to humans. Recombination within the viral receptor-binding protein may have allowed for cross-species transmission from snake to humans.

A second patient in the U.S. has tested positive for the new coronavirus from Wuhan, China, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The woman, a 60-year-old Chicago resident, had recently traveled to Wuhan and arrived back on Jan. 13. A couple of days after she returned, she began to experience symptoms and went to her doctor. The woman is now hospitalized in an isolation room, but she is in stable condition and doing well, Dr. Allison Arwady, the commissioner of Chicago's Department of Public Health, said during a news conference today (Jan. 24).
Since returning from China, the woman has had "very limited" movement outside her home, hasn't taken any public transportation and hasn't gone to any large gatherings, Arwady said. She wasn't traveling with anyone but those close to her in her home are being monitored for symptoms, Arwady added....

Coronavirus reaches Europe with two cases confirmed in France

Two cases of the coronavirus were confirmed in France on Friday — the first cases in Europe.
Both patients had traveled to China, the epicenter of the deadly outbreak that’s cropped up in a half-dozen other countries, leaving at least 26 people dead.
“We have two cases,” said France’s Health Minister Agnes Buzyn. “We will probably have other cases.”
One of the people sickened is a 48-year-old man who passed through Wuhan — where the coronavirus originated — before traveling to France on Wednesday. He is hospitalized in the southwestern city of Bordeaux, while the second person is hospitalized in Paris.
Buzyn said the second person also traveled to China but she had little other information on their case.
The minister said France is the first European country to have confirmed coronavirus cases partly because it’s developed a test allowing medics to rapidly diagnose the illness.

China Suddenly Increases Death Toll By Over 60% As Virus Jumps To Europe

Here's a glimpse of new virus-related developments that occurred overnight.

  • China announces another 15 deaths in Hubei province
  • Total number of confirmed cases now 1,000+, 41 dead.
  • China restricts travel for 46+ million people across 16 cities as the death toll surges.
  • AFP reports that the virus has jumped to Europe, with three confirmed cases now in France.
  • Two deaths have been reported outside Wuhan.
  • Some residents displaying symptoms are being turned away from hospitals.

  • Hospitals in Wuhan make urgent pleas for help and supplies.
  • Beijing orders PLA medics to assist in Wuhan treating patients
  • UK and US governments tell citizens to avoid outbreak zones.
  • 63 suspected cases in US, Senator says 3 confirmed, with two reported so far in Illinois and California, and two suspected in Minnesota

* * *Update (1700ET): All day we've been watching disturbing videos of hospital hallways littered with what appear to be dead bodies, yet the death toll from the Wuhan coronavirus hasn't budged from 26 since Beijing reported the first two deaths outside Hubei yesterday.
Now we know why: As we suspected, the virus has been claiming more victims. But the local authorities, who promised 'transparency' in everything virus-related, apparently felt the need to wait until 4 am local time to drop this massive bomb: Another 15 people have died in Hubei as hospitals struggle with severe shortages of nearly everything, including doctors and nurses. That brings the total number of casualties to 41. In addition, another 180 cases have been discovered in Hubei, bringing the total number of cases over 1,000.

The latest figures show that the virus is more deadly than previously thought.
Meanwhile, Sky News is reporting that officials in France have confirmed a third case of coronavirus in the country....

2 p.m. UTC—New Countries Confirm Cases

Authorities in Australia and Malaysia confirmed new cases of coronavirus, meaning the Wuhan virus has spread to 10 countries around the world.
The virus already spread to Nepal, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, Singapore, Thailand, the United States, and France.
The Australian cases included a Chinese national who flew into Melbourne on Jan. 19 and didn’t show symptoms until after landing. There were also three other men—aged 53, 43 and 35—who all arrived from Wuhan earlier in January, as early as Jan. 6.
All four were isolated and Australian authorities said the risk of transmission remains low.
Malaysian authorities, meanwhile, said three people tested positive for coronavirus.
The trio, all Chinese nationals, are related to the 66-year-old man who is isolated in neighboring Singapore with the illness. That man also transmitted the virus to his son.

Virus-hit Wuhan has two laboratories linked to Chinese bio-warfare program
The deadly animal virus epidemic spreading globally may have originated in a Wuhan laboratory linked to China’s covert biological weapons program, according to an Israeli biological warfare expert.

Radio Free Asia this week rebroadcast a local Wuhan television report from 2015 showing China’s most advanced virus research laboratory known the Wuhan Institute of Virology, Radio Free Asia reported.
The laboratory is the only declared site in China capable of working with deadly viruses.
Work on biological weapons is conducted as part of a dual civilian-military research and is “definitely covert,” he said in an email.
Mr. Shoham holds a doctorate in medical microbiology. From 1970 to 1991 he was a senior analyst with Israeli military intelligence for biological and chemical warfare in the Middle East and worldwide, holding the rank of lieutenant colonel.
China in the past has denied having any offensive biological weapons. The State Department, in a report last year, said it suspects China has engaged in covert biological warfare work.
A Chinese Embassy spokesman did not return an email seeking comment.

56 Million Chinese On Lockdown As Virus Spreads To Australia, Malaysia
As we move into Saturday evening on the ground in Wuhan, it's becoming increasingly obvious to the broader global community that China's authoritarian government has failed to contain this viral outbreak.
Chinese authorities expanded the travel restrictions on Saturday to cover 56 million Chinese, Al Jazeera reports. At least 18 cities in central Hubei are now dealing with at least some level of travel restrictions.

In Wuhan, the situation looks grim.
The number of confirmed cases is exploding: another 300 were announced on Saturday, while the death toll is steady at 41. Yesterday, videos flooded western social media (after being assiduously removed from Weibo and the rest of the Chinese Internet) purporting to show bodies piling up in hallways in Wuhan, with rumors that a doctor had succumbed to the virus.
Those rumors have now been confirmed: A doctor who worked at a hospital in Wuhan, China, where coronavirus patients are being treated died Saturday morning...

Did China Steal Coronavirus From Canada And Weaponize It
Sat, 01/25/2020

Last year a mysterious shipment was caught smuggling Coronavirus from Canada. It was traced to Chinese agents working at a Canadian lab. Subsequent investigation by GreatGameIndia linked the agents to Chinese Biological Warfare Program from where the virus is suspected to have leaked causing the Wuhan Coronavirus outbreak.

Coronavirus Bioweapon – How Chinese agents stole Coronavirus from Canada and weaponized it into a Bioweapon

...

The National Microbiology Lab (The Canadian Science Centre for Human and Animal Health) on Arlington St. in Winnipeg. Wayne Glowacki/Winnipeg Free Press Oct.22 2014

NML has a long history of offering comprehensive testing services for coronaviruses. It isolated and provided the first genome sequence of the SARS coronavirus and identified another coronavirus NL63 in 2004.
This Winnipeg based Canadian lab was targeted by Chinese agents in what could be termed as Biological Espionage.

Chinese Biological Espionage
In March 2019, in mysterious event a shipment of exceptionally virulent viruses from Canada’s NML ended up in China. The event caused a major scandal with Bio-warfare experts questioning why Canada was sending lethal viruses to China. Scientists from NML said the highly lethal viruses were a potential bio-weapon.
Following investigation, the incident was traced to Chinese agents working at NML. Four months later in July 2019, a group of Chinese virologists were forcibly dispatched from the Canadian National Microbiology Laboratory (NML). The NML is Canada’s only level-4 facility and one of only a few in North America equipped to handle the world’s deadliest diseases, including Ebola, SARS, Coronavirus, etc.
