The activity of DDoS attacks has grown by 23% in the last quarter compared to a record level of 1510 attacks, an increase of 180% over the third quarter of 2014. Specifically, the online gaming sector, has been hit particularly hard, with around 50% of all attacks.

These are some of the data collected from the latest report on cybersecurity held by Akamai, which disclosed a record increase of DDoS attacks, which were shorter, however, with average bandwidth and lower volumes. The mega-attacks (those from more than 100 Gbps) were only 8, compared with 12 in the previous quarter and 17 of Q3 2014. During the quarter the most intense DDoS attack – based on the exploitation of the botnet XOR – reached 149 Gbps, down from the 250 Gbps in the previous quarter.

Compared to Q3 2014

+ 179.66% of DDoS attacks
+ 25.74% of DDoS attacks and application layer (Layer 7)
+ 198.1% of DDoS attacks on the infrastructure level (Layer 3 and 4)
-15.65% in average duration of attacks: 18.86 vs. 22.36 hours
-65.58% in peak bandwidth
-88.72% peak volumes
+ 462.44% in reflection attacks
-52.94% of attacks for over 100 Gbps: 8 vs. 17

According to the report, Q3 marked a new record considering a different flow measurement of the attacks. Media and entertainment company has been hit by a record number of 222 million packets per second (Mpps) with a slight increase compared with 214 Mpps for the second quarter. Consider that the average peak volume for all attacks observed by Akamai in the quarter was 1.57 Mpps. An attack of this magnitude could knock out a router for tier 1 as used by Internet Service providers.

-8.87% in average duration of attacks: 18.86 vs. 20.64 hours
-25.13% in peak bandwidth
-42.67% peak volumes
+ 40.14% in reflection attacks
