Isn't it about time the White House had a distraction from the fiscal cliff (whatever that is)? How about the feasibility of building a real-world Death Star?

As of today, a petition calling for the government of the United States to begin construction on a Death Star by 2016 has more than 25,000 signatures on the administration's official public suggestion page, surpassing the threshold that triggers a required response from the White House.

The petition hit the mark today, just a day before reaching its 30-day expiration date. Conveniently, petition creator "John D." of Longmont, Colo., even provided some politician-friendly talking points to promote the idea:

This can be our next few generation's economic stimulus package. The world won't fall into a recession again

President Obama terminated the shuttle program, so I don't see it happening.
National health care is going to cost over 1 trillion a year, not including minor doctor visits and prescription drug handouts. That is about all we will be able to maintain.
Punishing our prime movers, top earners, investors, business owners, infrastructure/energy extractors, and entrepreneurs is going to put us in a depression that makes 1929 look like a small recession, so a project of that scope is unlikely for at least another 12 years.
The Death Star will have to wait. The national debt is 17 TRILLION and climbing fast. The President wants a 4 trillion dollar budget approved (that will be shattered). He also is pushing a 1.6 trillion dollar tax hike, while promising to cancel all of Bush's tax cuts.
We cannot even build a "Freedom Tower" in under 10 years for crying out loud, let alone even think about building two new world trade towers.
I guess if Mary Jane was legalized in all 50 states and the government taxed it at 97%, we might be able to hire Solyndra to look into R&D. Fannie Mae, USPS, and Freddie Mac prove that the government is not capable of such projects.
Who will put it in orbit for us? The Russians? Chinese? lol
Besides, once the Death Star is in orbit, someone will install a rootkit with a keylogger and eventually take control of our Death Star, and land it safely in Iran. hehe
