New in 2017.5: Anti-Ransomware

A world wide ransomware outbreak, like the one we witnessed last month with WannaCry, was probably just a matter of time. At least our team was not really hit by surprise: Ransomware has been on top of our Lab’s priority list for the past couple of years, but the epidemic proportions and speed of this samples’ infection have been unheard of. The entire world media reported about it across all channels: WannaCry was a major wake-up call for everyone who had previously neglected the seriousness, or worse, the existence of the ransomware threat.

We at Emsisoft see it as our responsibility to keep you safe from all kinds of ransomware, and we are confident that we can stay technological leaders in the fight against malware that encrypts your personal files. To emphasize our products’ strength in this regard, we decided to shift our existing and proven anti-ransomware capabilities into a separate projection layer component that we are calling “Anti-Ransomware”.

Contrary to most self proclaimed anti-ransomware specialist tools out there, Emsisoft Anti-Malware and Emsisoft Internet Security are able to block ransomware before it even encrypts the first data file. We consider that critically important, as recent ransomware samples have shown that criminals have become selective and are prioritizing your supposedly most important files for encryption. Our licensed security solutions don’t wait until a pattern of multiple file manipulations occurs, but intercept encrypters before they can touch anything. Prevention is key.

Note:
I loaded my backup drive that has EmsiSoft AM on it still, seeing I haven't cloned my drives yet.
They have implemented this module as of today, just update your EmsiSoft AM and it will appear. ;)

It's great to see AV/AM software incorporates an anti-ransomware feature into their software. Emsisoft claims it can block ransomware before it even encrypts the first data file....sure 100% ALL the time? What if it fails?

If it truly can be effective in blocking ransomware 100% ALL the time then it'll make dedicated anti-ransomware like AppCheck Pro, Temasoft Ranstop and Heilig Defense RansomOff obsolete, right?

By design it cant be 100 % all the time (it is close), but Emsisoft Behavior Blocker is still better than dedicated anti-ransomware solutions.

I think it has not been fully implemented yet because it is missing in "protection" there are no settings for it yet, give them time.

There are no settings because it is just a cosmetic (marketing) thing, Emsisoft protection against Ransomware is done using the "battle tested" behavior blocker and it is one of the best.

This is just a marketing move and there is no problem at all in that, consumers will apreciate to know that their solution can protect against Ransomware (and Emsisoft does it very well).

What if you use Emsisoft software and gets infected with ransomware? Can you sue the company based on their claim?
Harbor i love ya brother but really ? come on man.
Anti-Ransomware products fail all the time, look at how many fail in videos by CS, MT, ect
sueing them is not the answer and is useless in helping better the product, in fact is serves
to deplete their resources for improving the product.
Do you even use EmsiSoft ?

I think I get what you mean, it is just highlighting that your protected, I read this in the email I just got:
QUOTE

END
so judging by that it is just another protection layer added to the BB or file guard aspect of the protection, if I understood that was what you were getting at ?

Half-right because nothing on protection was actually changed, it is still the great and "battle-tested" Behavior Blocker protection.

MAMUTU (stand-alone Emsisoft behavior blocker) had protection against Ransomware many years ago, this protection continued to evolve in Emsisoft Anti-Malware ...

Ok, so yeah it's just there as a reassurance that were protected and no new settings will appear.
I got your point ;)

What if it fails?
If the product fails to protect you then it means your system becomes infected - since this discussion is based on ransomware then I would assume your files would be left encrypted.

Can you sue the company based on their claim?
The likelihood is that you would be potentially losing money instead of gaining it due to the amount of money you would require to spend in order to setup the lawsuit against the company (lawyer, court fee's and other expenses).

When you purchase and use a security product 9 times out of 10 you will accept a license agreement which outlines that the company is not responsible for damages caused by incidents of infection should the product fail to protect you. For this reason you could spend a lot of money on a lawsuit and still lose the case, resulting in you making absolutely no further gain and having lost even more than you originally had.
