Eset Internet Security 14
Installation

Installation Feedback
Installer is simple, fast and professional, without any unneeded introductory screens or advertisements. It does not install any useless junk, doesn't modify browser start or search settings and does not add any extensions. Installation takes about 1.5 min on a high-speed internet connection (cloud installer).
Interface (UI)

Interface Feedback
Eset's UI is not a showcase of sophisticated design and doesn't include eye-candies.
You won't see pandas and green bears and you won't be presented with a cool, slangish type of language.
However, it's very organised and easy to navigate.
The main screen includes options to launch secure browser, run a scan or check who's on your home network.
There is a vast multitude of settings, some of which can be quite confusing (for example machine learning). Eset has documented each one of them, if unsure, make sure you consult the product help files.
Usability

Usability Feedback
The product seems to handle pretty much any daily situation automatically, without bothering the user. Notifications can be further customised or even turned off and don't include any unnecessary information or complicated tech terms.
The default machine learning setup is optimised for a low (or in my case no) false positives, whilst still maintaining great detection rate. The tray options are enough to perform standard tasks, such as disabling Real-Time protection and firewall, or running a scan.

Eset Internet Security contains useful tools, such as SysInspector, process and activity monitor, network connections monitor, option to upload a sample to Eset and an option to download a rescue CD, in case of a heavily-infected system. These tools can be utilised by any tech-savvy person to discover and eradicate malware, in the unlikely event all layers of protection have failed.
Performance and System Impact

Performance and System Impact Feedback
Even on a not-so-modern device, Eset's performance impact is hardly noticeable without using specialised tools to measure it. Launching Chrome and browsing the web feel a lot faster than with any other AV - probably due to the lack of browser extensions. Downloading files and launching programs feels the same like having no AV (including Windows Defender) running.

The product only launches 2 services, consuming between ~90 mb in idle state. The memory usage can go up to 200 mb when the product fights a large set of malware. CPU usage in idle state rarely even reaches 0.5%.
During a full scan, CPU usage goes up to 18% max, whilst memory usage stays the same as in idle.
Bear in mid that performance can further be optimised. For example scanning only on file open and execution can be enabled, or scanning of archives can be disabled. I personally wouldn't change these settings.
Scan speed is not great on first scan (as with most other AVs), taking 32 minutes to scan 418 766 files.
Protection

Protection Feedback
Unfortunately, Eset is one of the few companies, still not offering VPN.

When I tested Eset against malicious and phishing links, scripts, Emotet documents (Microsoft Office documents with malicious macros) and java-based malware, the product didn't miss anything. However, I have configured machine learning to it's most aggressive levels. Some of them were 0-day. Part of them was obtained from VirusTotal, whilst others were obtained from sources I won't disclose for security reasons.

Anyone not familiar with the various protection layers can have a look at this whitepaper:
https://www.eset.com/fileadmin/ESET/INT/Docs/Others/Technology/ESET-Technology-2017.pdf

Eset's results on third-party tests have improved lately.
AV-Comparatives awarded Eset with Advanced + rating (99.8% detection rate). The test can be found here:
https://www.av-comparatives.org/tests/malware-protection-test-september-2020/

AV-Test has classified Eset as one of the top products.

Eset also holds the biggest number of VB100 awards and has the highest customer satisfaction rating on TrustPilot.

"Unfortunately, Eset is one of the few companies, still not offering VPN."
I'd say thats not a bad thing. It's quite annoying that every AV is trying develop its own VPN recently in my opinion. An AV is an AV and a VPN is a VPN. They should focus on their own field i guess.
Tbh I don't know of any AV that developed their own VPN... they are mostly "powered" by someone. But yes, I like Eset's laser focus.

there is no machine learning in consumer version, its just live a live grid and hips that you can tweak thats for sure.
There is machine learning in every av today.

This is from Eset:
"ESET has been working with machine learning algorithms to detect and block threats since 1990. Neural networks were added to ESET product's detection engine in 1998.

Machine learning includes DNA detections, which use models based on machine learning to work effectively with or without cloud connection. Machine learning algorithms are also a vital part of the initial sorting and classification of incoming samples as well as placing them on the imaginary “cyber-security map”.

ESET has developed its own in-house machine learning engine. It uses the combined power of neural networks (such as, deep learning and long short-term memory) and a handpicked group of six classification algorithms. This allows it to generate a consolidated output and help correctly label the incoming sample as clean, potentially unwanted or malicious.

The ESET machine-learning engine is fine-tuned to cooperate with other protective technologies such as DNA, sandbox and memory analysis as well as with the extraction of behavioral features, to offer the best detection rates and lowest possible number of false positives."

How is this compared to Kaspersky?
They are both effective and stable, with program updates issued frequently. For a lower price, Kaspersky offers more features (if you need them) and covers more devices. Kaspersky might be more automated and easy to handle in certain situations. Eset is lighter and more tweakable. It depends on your needs. If you are already a long-term user of either one of them, I don't see a reason for you to switch to another.
Kaspersky also offers SC free, which is a big +.

Thanks for the review! ESET IS & Kaspersky IS for me are the best, a fast PC maybe Kaspersky - A slower, ESET, the issue for me with ESET is it's expensive, if you don't mind that you can't go wrong with ESET, probably my first AV I bought NOD32 - I don't want no built in VPN with a AV :):)

Yeah and even if you are badly in a need of a VPN, which most users are not, you can purchase one separately. It’s true that Eset can be a bit more expensive but they do monthly payments as well.

I totally agree with you, but after I saw the Detection Engine screenshot, I switched to ESET Internet Security. Indeed ESET is more tweakable, and in a better way, IMHO.

Okay, today I will have to update my review of ESET, there is just no other way. Customer support is atrocious. If you think Norton and McAfee's customer support is lowest of the lowest, ESET's support is just the rock bottom.
For the money this product costs, you would expect friendly support round-the-clock. What you get is a forum administrator, that seemingly blames issues to the user. As someone who's been in the customer services field, I find it totally unacceptable.

Follow this thread to find out what I'm talking about.
