It's not cheap.
  • Expandable storage drives for Microsoft’s Xbox Series S and X consoles are now available to pre-order.
  • A 1TB drive will cost gamers $219.
  • The storage drive is manufactured by Seagate and uses PCIe 4.0-based technology.
But neither is a 4K60 capable PC rig with 32TB.

Don't forget that the Xbox Series S is marketed as a budget next-gen console. $299 sounds like a steal, and Microsoft picking proprietary hardware will make storage expansion more expensive than needed.

At this point, the Series X is better value than Series S.
  • Series S 512 GB SSD internal at $299 + 1TB SSD expansion at $219 ($518)
  • Series X 1TB SSD internal at $499 ($499) - better hardware!

A workaround I've seen are to copy games from external HDD to internal 512GB SSD, for NG consoles.

Proprietary hardware always costs more. Standard supported-ports will go down in price, as availability increases.
