Democrat Geoffrey Starks says the US government should replace risky Chinese telecommunications gear and fund rural carriers as part of the effort.
The main issue with Huawei is its cozy relationship with the Chinese government. National security officials fear that its equipment could be used to spy on other countries and companies. In May, President Donald Trump issued an executive order effectively banning new Huawei gear from US communications networks.
Huawei has long denied its gear can be used to spy or to compromise US security.
