Let's see here:

1) They have web protection only when you install their toolbar.

2)Avira's latest product has been bypassed by ransomwares before as there is a live video about it over here. When you stack up avast free vs avira free in the malware hub avast has been consistent in terms of protecting against something it doesnt know about. Now I am talking about both companies latest product not the older versions.

3) As compared to avast, avira gives less of features in the free version and earlier they were bargaining with installing ask toolbar for getting webguard in free version whereas avast hasn't been involved in such shady activities.

I used to love avira few months back but now they are falling out of favour again.
So,avira? They are good but no thanks!

While I admired the Free stuff from Avira, I can't justify the bundles they lump together. And to my horror the premium version.

Assume I want to buy the Optimization Suite package; I can also buy the following for myself:
1) Adguard 2 license (desktop + mobile) unlimited: $59.95
2) Emsisoft Internet Security (1U1Y) : $24.97
3) HitmanPro Alert (1U1Y): $34.95
4) Shadow Defender (1U): $35.00
5) NordVPN (1Yr): $69.00
6) Ccleaner Pro Plus (1U): $39.95
Total cost: $263.82.......
Coverage, almost similar...

i always used avira free antivirus but as the cloud only works in real time with paid version i uninstalled it...
I've never had the free security suite or whatever they call it.
The APC works the same now in the free or paid versions of Avira. The difference in the Pro AV is that it offers support, web protection, and email protection.

With its forced Launcher install, Avira is a PUP on par with Wise, Auslogics and IObit. Be careful!

Also, Avira's heavy-handed blocking disallows permanent white-listing. It simply blocked too many installers and programs for me. Despite a 3-year paid license, I found other, more user-friendly tools.
The launcher, which is now branded as "Connect", and "Avira System Tray" can be disabled in Windows Task Manager for Win 8.1 and 10. Just open the startup tab, select them, and choose "Disable". Done.

If you still want an icon to launch the Avira GUI, just drag the icon from the Windows start menu onto the task bar or desktop to create a shortcut. Done.

I am not a particular fanboy of any brand of AV. I just let the numbers guide me. Way back when, I was a Norton user, then Trend Micro, then Avast, etc. But I always eventually became disillusioned with PC performance issues, company practices, and 3rd party testing results.

So my main choice today is Avira, and it's only because of their numbers on 3rd party tests have consistently been in the top tier for several years.

This 12 month test report from AV-Test.org was certainly impressive, regarding clean-up and recovery. Put to the test for 12 months: This is how well security packages and special tools help after an attack

Not to mention the AV-Test standard testing for home users here: AV-TEST – The Independent IT-Security Institute

Plus these recent tests at AV-Comparatives: Malware Protection Test - AV-Comparatives

My second choice would probably be Bitdefender, but their free version seems to have some issues/lack of configuration ... paid is probably OK.

One of the members of this Forum tested APC in both Avira antivirus pro and free and in each test he proved APC works much better in Avira pro.

none of those tests worth a damn tho. i might start testing Avira in malware section just to prove what i think of it.
