Today, Google published an article on how improvements to search results have been rolled out, when quotation marks are used as a part of the search term.

Initially, the usage of quotation marks allowed you to search for a specific word or phrase, and the results will filter out all other options (e.g. "caesar salad" will not show results for Julius Caesar). The latest updates that Google introduced improves the snippets that are displayed when you are shown the search results.

These snippets often show a preview of the page that it is linking to, but previously would just show a select section of the page. When quotation marks are used in the search, the snippet will now display where in the page that word or phrase is located as shown in the image below.

Google Search's answer snippets should now provide higher quality answers

Google has announced some ways that it’s attempting to improve search results. The most interesting of these is the use of an updated AI model called Multitask Unified Model (MUM). With the latest update, Google has incorporated consensus into its results so when multiple sources agree on a fact, that’s what will be presented at the top of your results when asking questions.

With the new update, Google’s systems can identify snippets, even if different words are used, from high-quality sources to find out whether there is agreement on answers to queries. In its internal testing, Google said that the consensus method produced better quality answers to queries.

Google is seeking to improve search results by preventing unoriginal content

Google is introducing an update that filters out clickbait and promotes original content by creators. In a blog post today, the company stated how it is frustrating for users to see unoriginal and promotional content that is irrelevant to them. It also plans to focus on providing better product reviews, advocating “content made by, and for, people.”

The update will help get rid of content lacking quality and authenticity, especially on topics related to online education, tech, shopping, and arts and entertainment. The update is named the “helpful content update” as Google suggests it will ensure users get content that fits their requirements.

The company elaborated by giving the example of movie reviews and how they can be exaggerated. Google said the new changes would provide users “more results with unique, authentic information, so you’re more likely to read something you haven't seen before.”
