After five years of offering unlimited free photo backups at “high quality,” Google Photos will start charging for storage once more than 15 gigs on the account have been used. The change will happen on June 1st, 2021....
All photos and documents uploaded before June 1st will not count against that 15GB cap, so you have plenty of time to decide whether to continue using Google Photos or switching to another cloud storage provider for your photos. Only photos uploaded after June 1st will begin counting against the cap.

All I can say is this:


It makes no sense to end unlimited photo storage but people can still upload unlimited video. Last time I checked a video longer than 10 sec is bigger than a photo so what is the real intention here? Google is def not running out of storage space.

Source: Google's future Pixel phones won't offer unlimited Google Photos backups

As confirmed by Google in its blog post, photos uploaded from existing Pixel phones will not be impacted. If you own a Pixel phone, you can continue to upload photos and videos in High quality, without having to worry about hitting the 15GB cap.

Owners of future Pixel devices, however, will not enjoy that same benefit. Just like users with non-Pixel devices, they will have to spend money to expand their storage through Google One.

At least it remains Ad-Free.
