A cyberattack brought down the Covid-19 vaccine-scheduling website for the Italian region of Lazio, underscoring the vulnerability of healthcare data and vaccine technology during the pandemic.
On Sunday hackers attacked technology systems run by the government of Lazio, the region that encompasses Rome, Italian authorities said in a Facebook post. Lazio Regional President Nicola Zingaretti wrote on Facebook that scheduled vaccine appointments will take place but the system to book appointments will be disconnected for a few days. “The situation is serious,” he said. The attack appeared to be part of a supply-chain hacking campaign that also affected Italian companies, said Stefano Fratepietro, chief executive of Tesla Consulting S.r.l., a cybersecurity company based in Bologna, Italy. Mr. Fratepietro said he is working with another victim of the attack that appeared to use the same supplier as the Lazio government. He declined to provide further details.
