How to install Android Lollipop based OxygenOS on to OnePlus One

OnePlus today released the much awaited OxygenOS update for its flagship One smartphone in India.

The said Android-based operating system brings a Lollipop update in addition to a set of features from the Chinese smartphone manufacturer.

Whether or not this is what you prefer, the OxygenOS bestows “pure Android experience”.
The update is meant only for the OnePlus One smartphones sold in India.

OnePlus One global variant runs on Cyanogen’s Android KitKat-based CM 11 software.
Days ahead of One’s launch in India, Cyanogen partnered with Micromax to give it an exclusive right to ship Cyanogen’s software in the country.

The move spoiled OnePlus’ plan to debut in India with a bang. Cyanogen made it clear that it won’t be providing any software updates to OnePlus’ Indian variant.

OnePlus announced that it will soon release an Android 5.0 based operating system for devices by the end of January. The company missed the deadline, but the software update is finally here.

Cyanogen announced that it won’t offer any update to OnePlus handsets in India. But a recent tweet by Carl Pei, one of the co-founders of the company, says CM12S will be rolled out to Indian users.

@rajarshi_10 We released an L alpha a while ago, but a more stable build (OxygenOS & CM12S) will need to wait until March. Sorry for delay!

The company hasn’t clearly specified how users are supposed to snag the OxygenOS update on their CM11-powered OnePlus One as it would require manual flashing of the ROM and can't be snagged as an OTA update.

OnePlus notes that OxygenOS is largely the stock version of Android Lollipop with little tweaks from the company’s end. “We want to be careful that we aren’t adding features simply for the sake of differentiation. We’ve implemented some important features thus far, but they are subtle and meaningful. That’s our philosophy behind OxygenOS: keep it light and essential.”.

The company further notes that the update is riddled with minor bugs.
These bugs include limited filesystem support while using OTG features; inability to hang up a call using headphone controls; crashes while uploading files to the cloud; and no multiselection support for deleting files.

If you’re interested in flashing the OxygenOS ROM on your OnePlus smartphone, follow the steps below. Do note that if you fail to properly flash your smartphone, OnePlus won’t cover the damage or replace your device.

Step 1
Download OxygenOS from here. Download and install Fastboot and ADB.

Step 2
Flash a recovery onto your device. The company advises you to use TWRP.

Step 3
Boot into the flashboot mode. You can do this on your OnePlus One by holding down the power button and the volume up button. When you see the fastboot logo, connect your device to your computer.

Step 4
Unzip oxygenos_1.0.0.zip. In there, you will see a oxygenos_1.0.0.flashable.zip file. Copy oxygenos_1.0.0.flashable.zip to your phone.

Step 5
Boot into recovery. You can do this on your OnePlus One by holding down both the volume down key and the power button.

Step 6
Once you are in the recovery interface, the first thing you want to do is a factory reset.

Step 7
After the wipe, go to install and find oxygenos_1.0.0.flashable.zip. Confirm flash. This will flash OxygenOS onto your device.

Step 8
After the flash succeeds, you can reboot the device, which will take you to the new OxygenOS.
