I had this brand new HP Pavilion A535W computer that was sitting in its box in my closet that I set up this past Spring. The system came with Norton 10 anti-virus protection installed on the system, no CDs for Norton. The subscription to Norton has long since expired so anti-virus protection will no longer update. I wish to completely remove Norton A-V 10 protection from my system and switch to something free such as Avast. My computer uses Windows XP Home Edition OS with SP 3. I am using a dialup connection with Netzero. Control Panel shows Norton AntiVirus 2004 and Norton WMI Update.

Norton AntiVirus Version 10.00
Virus Definitions Version 12/18/2003 Rev Not Up To Date
Last Disk Scan on Friday, June 07, 2013 8:53:20 PM
Realtime File Scanning On

Should I go to Norton's website or can I do this here with you?
Again I wish to completely remove all traces of Norton A-V protection from my system.
Thank you

Like Earth said use the removal tool, as that will get rid of all the components of Norton. Compared to the built in Windows one.

You cant remove Norton AV 10 using the Norton uninstaller (unfortunately). That works in newer versions of Norton's antivirus. You need to do whats described in this links.

He's saying the current 'Norton Removal Tool' (from my post), doesn't support removing older versions of Norton such as v10.

You'll need to remove it manually, or

If you need support from Norton, you can contact them here:

I would start with the core program, Norton Antivirus 2004. It should remove both products.

@Sweets, if I was you, I would follow Earths suggestion and go to the Norton forum before doing the uninstallation as described in the links that I posted. Personally, I don't like uninstalling programs as described in the links but it seems to me that those are the ways to do it.

My HP computers came with Norton, while running the uninstaller tool, the uninstaller is specific about what programs can be removed using the tool. When I read your post yesterday and saw that the version that the computer has is an old Norton version, I knew the tool is not for you.

Good luck

Reply: Yes i think i should go to Norton's website first before i remove anything. So that I can present them with the version I have that came with this HP Pavilion and follow their steps to fully remove any trace from the registry. Their updates take extremely long for this dialup system. As an alternative my daughter offered me one of the three Norton A-V programs she bought and doesnt need. I guess i could find out if I need to fully uninstall this version first at norton.com ?

Thanks for your advice.

Considering the age of the product that is pre-installed on your PC, I would assume modern versions of Norton would require a clean install, where upgrades are not possible.

Remember to check to see if you like anything from here:

@Sweets, dont forget upgrading the computer to SP3. In my opinion, that is more important than the AV you choose to use. Regarding the AV, if I was you, I would install something like MSE after uninstalling Norton.

Regards
