Intel promises that a costly ramp in production of 10nm processors, which includes the forthcoming Sapphire Rapids server chips, will pay off in the second half of the year to counter a slowdown in the PC business.

In the x86 titan's first-quarter earnings call Thursday [PDF], the semiconductor maker stuck with its previous forecast for full-year revenue of $76 billion, even though sales for its biggest moneymaker, the Client Computing Group, are slower than expected in the first half of the year.

The PC business unit saw revenue dip 13 percent year-over-year to $9.3 billion in the first quarter, and that trend is expected to continue in the second quarter, CFO David Zinsner warned on the call. On the other hand, Intel's other business units, including the Datacenter and AI Group and Network and Edge Group, all grew in the first quarter.

Sorry, but aren’t Apple about to move from 5nm M1 to 4nm M2 chips?

Begs the question, what have Intel been doing for 40 years? Reaming the guts out the x86 processor, and that’s it?

How can they still be #1?

Intel has been promising this shift for many years now, while AMD has switched to the N5 TSMC node for EPYC and Zen chips and will soon manufacture Zen with the 3nm process.

Interesting video on the importance of Taiwan to the whole global chip/semi conductor industry & the risk to advanced technology in the West if China decides to 'do a Ukraine'. The more production that US/Europe can relocate or build on home soil the better and if that means state subsidy so be it IMHO. Relevant clip starts about 11:30 in although whole video is an interesting watch.

Wow, wow, and wow… I don’t know whether to be terrified or inspired.

But you’re correct, decentralise chip manufacturing now! I totally understand the US investment/subsidy in Intel etc.

Video should be mandatory viewing, for all tech people at least.

Wow! Thank you.
