As we reported last week, Intel’s Meltdown and Spectre patch is causing reboot problems for older processors. Now Intel says the current firmware updates may be causing computers with newer chips to reboot more frequently as well. In a blog post, Intel VP Navin Shenoy said firmware-updated PCs with Ivy Bridge, Sandy Bridge, Skylake, and even Intel’s most recent Kaby Lake processors are all affected.

The patches can also impact performance, with Intel saying that data center tests simulating a stock exchange interaction and online transaction showed a 4 percent slowdown. Other testing of various server workloads showed a slowdown of as much as 25 percent. Shenoy wrote that Intel has issued firmware updates for 90 percent of its CPUs introduced over the past five years, but noted that the company had “more work to do.”

Intel CEO Brian Krzanich previously penned an open letter and promised to be more transparent about CPU and performance impacts. The Meltdown and Spectre security flaws affect nearly every computing device made in the past two decades.

Someone ought to put a pricetag on how much it costs Microsoft to deal with a mess they didn't create. I bet they are finally done with Intel and can't wait for ARM always on laptops that don't cause as much trouble.

A huge, solid mess!! "Thank you" Intel...

Intel shouldn't continue to exist as a company after this. Capitalism dictates, they don't survive this. Why would anyone in the world buy an Intel processor again after this fiasco? I think Intel will find most of the world outside of the USA isn't as forgiving as the USA is. Largely, I suspect, because Intel is joined at the hip with our military industrial complex and has what amounts to an unlimited stream of cash.

Jake Williams and other experts believe the NSA/CIA knew all about Meltdown, and exploited to compromise systems around the world. I tend to agree, it's probably incredibly unlikely they didn't and this was their 'ace in the hole' for TAO operations. Remember, TAO largely intercepted devices like Cisco Switches and such, but they largely ignored processors, if they didn't have backdoors, they'd probably have been more aggressive with TAO on system/server shipments.. We have no indications they even attempted to interdict system/server shipments.. Draw your own conclusions.

Surely people who have purchased systems with Intel CPU's or purchased an Intel CPU as an upgrade should be getting compensated for this mess.

Intel is in more trouble after it was revealed they are now launching a far reaching lawsuite against Intel for Meltdown. Basically, Apple does have a willful negligence claim, loss of business, damages, etc. Intel can't really win that.

Also Israeli Govt. and citizens/companies are launching a far reaching lawsuit against Intel, papers were failed in Haifa Monday. The paper filings noted;

"That this is an earthquake is an understatement. Since the announcement by the companies of the vulnerabilities of their products, we realize that we are living in a fantasy world and now realize that we do not even have a minimum of privacy."

What we expect from NSA? They didn't know anything and didn't do anything in public.
I really hope they will not meltdown my Intel CPU after this comment...
