Introducing New Linux-based Norton Bootable Recovery Tool 2016.1.0

New Linux-based NBRT

It is truly a milestone event that we have released a newer version of Norton Bootable Recovery Tool (NBRT). The newer version is designed to run on Linux OS instead of WinPE OS and can be downloaded from the NBRT portal site. The change was necessary due to the expiration of re-distribution rights of WinPE OS.

The current WinPE-based NBRT version has been serving for nearly two decades.

Over time, NBRT has dealt with many tough-to-remove threats and we understand that NBRT can save the last bacon at unfortunate times. Therefore Norton team decided to invest in the development of a newer version that can run on Linux OS. Nearly all components had to be re-written for the new OS environment and now the newer version is ready to take over the critical missions.

Better and more are coming!

The new Linux-based NBRT version is shipped with several utility tools including a web browser and command-line tool. No more special tool like NBRTWizard is required to create a bootable media with the latest antivirus definition. Users can directly download the NBRT ISO image and load it to a bootable media of their choice: DVD or USB. Once started, the new version checks for the availability of newest antivirus definitions and automatically updates the product.

The new version also supports both wired and wireless network connection and compatible with SATA/SSD disks. IDE disks are no longer supported. Most importantly, because it is implemented using the Linux kernel, the newer version is free and open to all community users.

Below is a quick summary of features included in this release.

New

  • The new version is free of charge and open to all community
  • Direct ISO download
  • Automatic update of virus definitions
  • No limit on the number of files
  • Support scanning container files
  • Supports SATA/SSD disks
  • Supports wired and wireless network connections
  • 26 product languages

Changes and known issues

  • No “Undo” support – to be implemented in future releases
  • The boot-media creation tool NBRTWizard is no longer supported
  • The tool may not work as expected in Virtual Machines

System Requirements

  • Supported target system OS: XP/Vista/Win7/Win8/Win 10, 32/64 bits
  • System disk space required: 2 GB
  • Bootable media (USB /DVD) space required: 2 GB

Your Opinion matters!

NBRT is a unique tool that we hope that it can benefit many users in troubles with severe system infection. When users believe that their PCs are infected; we still encourage the users to first try out the full system scan by Norton Security; and then run Norton Power Eraser (NPE).

At very rare events, threats can be hiding itself at startup; and can only be detected and removed by a tool like NBRT. For that reason, we do not expect to see many usage of NBRT but if you happen to use the tool, please let us know of what worked and didn’t work for you. That way we can prioritize our next set of enhancements and improve the effectiveness of NBRT.

There are two ways you can support us and they are:

  1. Using the product, please provide your feedback with the online “Leave Feedback” Help menu.
  2. Directly visit the feedback page, and leave us with your comments.
